Lesson 3: Modifying the Appearance of a Worksheet

In this lesson you are going to edit, change and modify a worksheet using the Font Properties. You will also learn how to add borders and colors to the cells. Also, you will learn how to format numbers. You will learn the skills in applying styles in the cells, and know how to rename sheet tab. You will also learn how to insert and delete columns and rows in a worksheet. You will also know how to rename sheet tabs.

Section 3.1 - Applying Font Properties

The Font Group Commands

The commands in the Font Group allow you to set and change the font type, style, font color, fill color and border of the fonts.

Font name box Changes the font style
Font size box Changes the point size of text
Font Increase and Decrease Changes the point size of text
Bold Changes font style to bold
Italic Changes font style to italic
Underline Underlines text
Border Adds border to selected area
Fill color Adds highlight color on text
Font color Changes font color

Selecting Cells, Columns or Rows

By selecting cells, rows or columns, you can easily modify the data format of your worksheet. Select a cell by clicking your mouse on the cell. To select the range of cells, point your mouse on the cell and the mouse will change to a cross. Click and drag your mouse to highlight the group of cells.

To select columns or rows, point your mouse on the column header or row header and the mouse will change to an arrow. Click and drag to the column or columns that you would like to select.


Changing the Font, Font Style, and Font Size

You can change the text's attributes such as font, font style, font color and size even after you have created and saved your worksheet.

MS Excel 2010�s new feature is when you move your mouse over the font options, the selected text in the cell or group of cells will display a preview of the outcome if you will select that particular option. The modified font will only be applied after you have clicked the option you have chosen.

To change the font, font style and size:

  1. STEP 1. Select or highlight the cell or range of cells you want to change.
  2. STEP 2. Click the Home tab, go to the Font group and click the Font drop-down arrow to select the font.
  3. STEP 3. Beside the font, you can find the Font Size drop-down arrow for the font size options.
  4. STEP 4. Below the font, you can select from different styles like like Bold , Italics and, Underline options.
  5. STEP 5. Beside the font styles, you can find the drop-down arrow for Font and Fill color options.
  6. STEP 6. Click the Dialog Box launcher to display the Format Cells Dialog Box.

Using the Dialog Box Launcher to set the font, size, style, color:

  1. Step 1. On the Font Group, click the Dialog Box launcher .
  2. Step 2. When the dialog box appears, click the Font tab to select the font, style, size and color.
  3. Step 3. Click OK.


Coloring the Text

  1. Step 1. Select the text you want to color.
  2. Step 2. Click the Home tab, go to the Font group and click the Font Color.


Adding Lines and Borders

You can place lines and borders on any cell in your worksheet.

  1. Step 1.Select the cell or group of cells that you would like to add line or border.
  2. Step 2.On the Font group, click the Border arrow and select from the list of border options.
