1. Hit The Lights
(Hetfield/Ulrich) [4:17] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
The song Hit The Lights
appeared as Metallica's first vinyl release on the "Metal Massacre I"
compilation album of which were more than 100.000 copies sold. Their first demo "No
Life 'Till Leather" included this song.
The subject matter of the song is nothing more than just to whip up their fan's emotions.
The song is about Metallica and their fans and how they are acting on their gigs. The
lyrics are speaking for itself. |

2. The Four Horsemen
(Hetfield/Ulrich/Mustaine) [7:08] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
The lyrics of The Four
Horsemen are relating to the subject matter of a bible story in the final book of the
New Testament in the "Chapter 6 of Revelations" which is called "The Four
Horsemen of Apocalypse". The horsemen should spread in each of the four directions to
pronounce "The Last Judgement - Doomsday" of the world.
It has almost always been a part of the live show before the release of the ... And Justice For All
album. Is still a fixed part of the 'Kill medley'. The former version of the song, The Mechanix, appeared on
Metallica's first demo tape "No Life 'Till Leather". It has been partly written
by their original guitarist Dave Mustaine. Metallica wrote new lyrics and renamed the song
into The Four Horsemen after they kicked Dave out. Later the song "The Mechanix"
appeared on Megadeth's (Dave's band after Metallica) debut album called "Killing Is
My Business... And Business Is Good". |

3. Motorbreath
(Hetfield) [3:03] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| This thrash classic was rumored to
be inspired by cocaine, but is actually about being a loyal fan of the band's music |
|
| Jump In The Fire is about temptation.
From the perspective of the devil, James sings of how easily peole give in to
tempatations. Released as both a 12" single and limited edition picture disc with the
devil looming large in a pit of flames. |

5. (Anesthesia)
Pulling Teeth (McGovney/Burton)
[4:14] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| Supposedly written by original
bassist Ron McGovney, this bass solo was adopted and augmented by Cliff Burton and would
become his trademark. |
|
6. Whiplash
(Hetfield/Ulrich) [4:06] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| Whiplash is said to
introduce the "headbanging" phenomenon, like Cliff used to on stage when he was
playing. Whiplash was one of the fastest songs on the album and even now it is still
played at some gigs. |
|
7. Phantom Lord (Hetfield/Ulrich/Mustaine)
[4:52] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| The song that begins side-two of
the vinyl version of Kill Em All, Phantom Lord is the arragant war cry of a
mythical heavy metal creature. The most musically mature song on the album, it hints at
where the band's sound would head. |
|
8. No Remorse (Hetfield/Ulrich)
[6:24] |
|
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| Metallica's first anti-war song,
No Remorse talks of people who go off to war for the sake of killing; gutless and
numb to the pain of their victims. |
|
9. Seek
And Destroy (Hetfield/Ulrich) [6:50] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| During the band's current
concerts, with vocals now handled by Jason, this song is part of the audience
participation portion of the show. Fans lucky enought to be at the front of the stage or
in the Snake Pit are given the chance to emulate their heroes by chimming in with the
song's title, while Hetfield holds the microphone and judges each attempt. |
|
9. Metal
Milita (Hetfield/Ulrich/Mustaine) [5:11] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| The song Metal Militia
with its speed is a good example for Metallica's trash metal style of their early days.
Their first demo "No Life 'Till Leather" included this song. |
