 1. Enter Sandman
 (Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammet) [5:29] |
[
-- Lyrics -- ] |
The first track on 'the Black
Album', Enter Sandman was an instant hit. It was performed at the 1991 MTV
Video Music Awards on September 5 in Universal City, CA, and at the 1992 Grammy Awards on
February 25th 1992, which they won.
It was also performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert, a concert for AIDS awareness
on April 20th 1992. And the song has literally been played at every gig since August of
1991. Enter Sandman is about a child's
nightmares, and the sandman watching him or her.
It was not only covered by great artists like Nirvana, Foo
Fighters and Motorhead, its main riff was also played by Dream Theater at the end of their
live song 'Peruvian Skies'. |

(Hetfield/Ulrich)[5:24] |
[

| Sad But True was their
fifth single release on the Black Album, this pure power stomp is about one's darker side
taking over. |
|
 3. Holier Than Thou
(Hetfield/Ulrich) [3:47] |
[ -- Lyrics -- ] |
| There are different
visions on the meaning of this very aggressive song. One says its about gossips, rumours
and critics and the other says that it is about hypocritical TV-evangelists and
counterfeit preachers. Holier Than Thou was played a couple of times on their
tour in 1991. |

 4. The Unforgiven
(Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammet)[6:26] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| The Unforgiven is about
the government who is controlling the life of the weaker. A person conformed by society
and denied the chance to be creative and open-minded.Its the second single release on the
black album and it has two video's. One longer version containing a long intro and one
shorter version. It was covered by Apocalyptica in 1996. They played it masterfully with 4
cello's on their debut album. |
|
 5. Wherever I May
Roam (Hetfield/Ulrich)[6:42] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| The intro of this song is played
by James with an Indian folk instrument, the sitar. The song is about the band being on
tour and leaving their girlfriends, friends, and loved ones behind. In the lyrics the band
is compared with a roaming vagabond whose souls keep on roaming even after their death.
It's released as a single. |
|
 6. Don't Tread On Me

Matters (Hetfield/Ulrich)[6:29] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| Nothing Else Matters has
been played by Metallica at every gig since it was first released on the black album. It's
basically about their fans and the life behind Metallica. The orchestration is arranged by
Michael Kamen, yes the same guy that did S&M. The song is covered by Apocalyptica and
Die Krupps. |
|
 9. Of Wolf And Man
(Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammet)[4:16] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |

is about a werewolf. A man who changes into a wolf at full moon. During live shows, James
used to howl like a wolf. The inspiration for this song came from a movie called 'Wolfen'
. |
|
 10. The God That
Failed (Hetfield/Ulrich) [5:05] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| The God That Failed is a
very personal song for James. His mother, who died by cancer, refused to seek medical aid
because she believed so much in her fate. The song is about broken promises and it has
only been played live during the shows in 1994 and 1995. |
|
 11. My Friend Of
Misery (Hetfield/Ulrich/Newsted)[6:47] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| My Friend Of Misery
describes an outsider view of someone reveling in self-pity and maintaining a pessimistic
view of the entire world. |
|
 12. The Struggle
Within (Hetfield/Ulrich)[3:51] |
[
-- Lyrics
-- ] |
| The last track on the black album,
The Struggle Within, is about a person who is suffering from a self-defeating
personality. It was never on any live setlist. |
