My opinion:
In one word: excellent! This album is jam-packed with the best songs of
Metallica, superbly enhanced by the San Francisco Orchestra. The intro, Ecstasy, Ktulu and
Master played after each other is really amazing. The orchestra begins playing the cover
by Morricone, then The Call Of Ktulu begins, which builds the tension towards one
of the most powerful songs on the album (and in the history of music), Master Of
Puppets. The orchestra really adds another level to the music. Like Master, Fuel also
rocks ass, and The Memory Remains, where the audience does the
'da-da-da-da-da-da-da'-part is done really good,. Memory is followed by the first new song
on the album, No Leaf Clover. Clover is really an awesome song, on some parts
James' voice sounds really strange, metallic-like. The song has very good guitar riffs,
but the orchestra really performs good on this song. Both Hero Of The Day and Bleeding
Me are two of my favorite 'slow' songs on the album, and Devil's Dance is in
my opinion on this album much better than on ReLoad.
If you thought the first CD was good, CD2 is maybe even better. The first song on
the second disc, Nothing Else Matters is so magnificent that Metallica
re-released it as a single. This is really a good song, although I like the original
electric guitar solo better. Until It Sleeps and The Outlaw Torn are
each good 'easy'-songs. For Whom The Bell Tolls is also totally awesome, the
orchestra really does a nice job on this song, combining with the ass-kickin' riffs played
by Kirk, James and Jason making this a classic. The next song - Human is the 2nd
new song. If you ask me, only the intro of this song is good, the rest of the song is kind
of boring, too bad. Sad But True is nice too, but I liked the version on The
Black Album. Sad is followed by a song that redefines the word kickass, of course I'm
talking about One. It starts out really good, after the usual gunfire intro, the
orchestra tunes are really well tied into the typical, well known one-riff. The song works
masterfully to its climax, which is truly brutal, combining the entire orchestra playing
with the super-fast drumming of Lars and awesome soloing from Kirk. This is really
Metallica on its best. One is followed by Enter Sandman, which is also very
impressive. Especially the part when you think the song is over, but then all of a sudden
the band starts playing again. The album closes with Battery, also very nicely
done, but I like the original version better.
