Boom-Boom

He has just turned 20. At Super Bantamweight Division, so far his records show that he is unbeaten with 20 wins, 15 of those were by knock-outs. Can you just imagine how far can he still go?

Reynaldo Boom Boom Deligos Bautista is second to the eldest of Alberto and Susana Bautista. A native of Can-olin, Candijay, Bohol, he had his elementary there and continued secondary education at Talamban National High School. When opportunities in boxing came, he had to give up for the meantime his Criminology Degree at the University of Visayas.

He started boxing as early as 12 years old. Under the management of the well-respected and humble Tony Aldeguer, trained by former world contender Edito Villamor and now under the watchful eyes of the training master himself, Freddie Roach, Boom-Boom has gained his reputation of being tagged as the next boxing superstar.

The Next Boxing Superstar!
Proud to be Pinoy!
Wearing the WBO Asia-Pacific
Bantamweight Championship Belt

Why not? In his recent bout, he made an awesome knock-out record against Nicaragua’s Roberto “El Chucky” Bonilla at an early third round last May 20, 2006 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

More than all his boxing credits, we will bring you more personal stuff about him. e-BOTAK got the scoop! This is Boom-Boom’s first-ever e-newsletter feature!

Boom-Boom Revealed

e-BOTAK: Why did they call you 'Boom-Boom?'
Boom-Boom: When I shadow box, (boxing against the air) my gloves make a sound - ‘boom-boom.’ Also, when I’m up in the ring, I have the boom-boom (push forward) drive until I bring down my opponent. (Certainly, we don’t call him Boom-Boom for nothing, because his power punches are BLASTFUL BOOM-BOOM!)

e-B: What kind of training do you undergo?
Boom-Boom: I still train everyday except Sunday - conditioning every afternoon, 1 hour jogging everyday and mountain run twice a week.

e-B: Who has/have been your inspiration?
Boom-Boom: My family and my fans.

e-B: Who is your boxing idol?
Boom-Boom: Felix Trinidad

e-B: And why is he your choice?
Boom-Boom: Because he’s a crowd pleaser. He is exciting to watch. Trinidad is well-known for his ring savvy. (Felix Trinidad is one of Puerto Rico’s finest boxers with a world record of 42 wins, 35 KOs and only 2 losses, a former multi-division champion of the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Council.)

e-B: Besides boxing, what other sports are you into?
Boom-Boom: I like watching baseball. (Oftentimes, Boom-Boom would play the sport in his Bohol hometown, during his leisure time).

e-B: What do you like to do when you’re not busy with boxing?
Boom-Boom: When I’m not busy with boxing I enjoy strolling at the malls. I love going out. I like riding the motorcycle. And I love eating too!

e-B: Seems you have a good appetite, what are your favorites?
Boom-Boom: I have a sweet tooth actually. I love biko and cassava cake.

Lord of his Ring

e-B: How do you feel that you are tagged as the next boxing superstar?
Boom-Boom: Happy but I also feel pressured that I have to live up to this expectation. Hope I won’t disappoint them.

e-B: You had a tremendous 3 round against Bonilla, what can we expect in your next fight with Montiel?
Boom-Boom: Let’s just see. I will try my best to have a good fight against Montiel and hopefully, beat him.

e-B: How do you prepare for your July bout? (As of this writing, Boom-Boom has been in the rigid training for his fight against Montiel).
Boom-Boom: I’m still training. I started right after I came back from the US (after his bout against Bonilla). I had a few days rest but went back to training right away in preparation for the fight.

e-B: They say you might steal the spotlight in Mano-A-Mano (Pacquiao vs Larios) as you play for the undercard, how do you feel about this?
Boom-Boom: No. I wouldn’t want to steal the spotlight from Manny. He is the main event. I’m only in the undercard.

e-B: Have you ever realized that you would come this far?
Boom-Boom: No, I did not realize I would come this far.

e-B: Are you willing to go showbiz too, like Pac Man?
Boom-Boom: If there’s an offer, why not!

e-B: What is the secret of your success?
Boom-Boom: Discipline, faith in God, and respect for my elders -- my parents and my manager.

e-B: How do you see yourself in boxing 3-5 years from now?
Boom-Boom: Hopefully, I will be a world champion by then.

e-B: Do you think you’ll be ready for a title fight soon?
Boom-Boom: I will be ready, maybe – about 1 or 2 fights after Montiel.

It looks like a very good future awaits the young and humble Rey Bautista. Presently the No. 1 Super Bantamweight Contender, he has the power punches and moves of the next boxing sensation. His story is yet another proof that humble beginnings can lead to great feats. It also shows that Filipinos are on top of our league and we are capable of bringing more honor for our country.

As Isport BOTAK believes in the Filipino pride and strength, we support Boom-Boom all the way to his success as the next sports hero for each and every Kababayan, in the Philippines and around the globe.

Special thanks to Mr. Tony Aldeguer, Boom-Boom’s manager for granting us this feature and Ms. Clarice Catipay of ALA Boxing Gym – Cebu for providing us the photos and for her warm assistance on this interview. - June 7, 2006

Now ready to face the Mexican and veteran Alejandro Felix "Good Boy" Montiel on the undercard of Mano-a-Mano – Pacquiao vs Larios (July 2, 2006 at the Araneta Coliseum), Boom-Boom gets a wide following that he can put down the 35 year-old Montiel who holds a 17-year career, with a record of 51 wins, 30 KOs, and only 7 losses. (Picture this, Montiel already started his boxing career when Boom-Boom was just two years old. This is going to be an exciting fight, an experienced veteran against a very promising and unbeaten young boxer!)

To recall some more highlights of his career, in August 2004, Boom-Boom grabbed the then vacant WBO Asia-Pacific Bantamweight Championship against the Thai Saensak Singmanasak during the 2nd round by knock-out. The title remained his by unanimous decision in his brawl against Vuyisile Bebe of South Africa in October 2005.

Also, in June 2005, he beat down the Mexican Gilberto Bolanos on the 6th round and in September he razed Colombian Felix Murillo on the 3rd round. Boom-Boom also defeated Tanzanian Obote Ameme on the 2nd round during their December 2005 bout. All of these opponents, he pummeled down by KOs!

And of course, he turned out as the real fighter with his unanimous ten round decision against hard-hitting Mexican Gerardo Espinoza also in December 2005. What a record!

"I wouldn’t want to steal the spotlight from Manny. He is the main event. I’m only in the undercard."

"My life is still the same except that now I can provide for my family and people recognize me. Aside from that, I’m still the same Rey Bautista."

e-B: What is your message to our Kababayans?
Boom-Boom: To all my fans and kababayans, thank you for your support. I hope you will continue to support me in my future fights. Let’s pray and hope that I can win this fight with Montiel and also in my future fights… and that I will continue to make the Filipino people proud.
Latest Update on Boom-Boom: (June 29, 2006)

Unfortunately, on the evening of June 25, 2006, Boom-Boom was rushed to a hospital in Cebu. He was confined for three days due to viral infection. In as much as we would want to watch Boom-Boom in Mano-a-Mano, the doctor has advised him not to go on with the bout for health reasons.

Moreover, there are still plans for Boom-Boom to fight in another Golden Boy Promotion (schedule has yet to be confirmed). Hopefully he can still have a match with Montiel, and that we’ll find out soon.

Furthermore, we can expect the next Boxing Superstar back in the ring soon and rule his next rounds!
