Summary

We examined all the components of the digital camera and how they worked together to take a photograph. These components are:

  • The image-capturing device, which is a sensor. The sensors can either be CCD or CMOS, where the former is the most commonly used.
  • The resolution of the sensor-which is measured in Megapixels. The higher the pixel-count the better the resolution and hence, the quality of the picture.
  • The colour filter which, ads colour to the images. It was noted that there are several filter methods used to add colour to the image, with the Bayer filter being the most commonly used.
  • The shutter, which controls the exposure.
  • The focal length, which determines the zoom of the camera. We also discussed the four types of zoom in a digital camera, namely: Fixed focus, Optical Zoom, Digital Zoom and the Replaceable Lens system.
  • The storage medium, which can be internal and external. It was shown that there are several storage devices. These include: memory cards, memory sticks and CDs just to name a few.

We also discussed some of the many features of the digital camera such as: the LCD screen, on ceremonies, photo editing flash selections, Rapid Burst mode and the preset photo modes, just to name a few.

The advantages and the disadvantages of the digital camera were also discussed.

A guideline for purchasing a digital camera was discussed to enlighten potential buyers of the points to keep in mind before making an investment in a digital camera. Before buying a digital camera one should:

    • Know what he or she will be using the camera to do.
    • Choose the appropriate resolution and zoom
    • Consider the size camera that would be best suited for your activities
    • Know the required peripheral devices.
With all of this information in mind coupled with the guidelines for buying a digital camera, one may conclude that overall the digital camera is a good investment to make and that you will be guided to make an intelligent decision if you choose to purchase a digital camera.
