John David Dunne, better known as JD, is basically an average out west guy with an average life. Sort of. He grew up in Philadelphia, only child of an upper middle class single mother. To help support them, he took a job as a stable boy when he was fourteen, caring for the racehorses and other animals that were boarded at Belmont Park. When he was nineteen, his mother dies in a street shooting. He finished high school and, having no real family ties in New York City and a desire to see the West, headed to Arizona State University in Phoenix. He took a two year short program in Law Enforcement, and then headed to a small town that was in dire need of law enforcement, where he met William "Buck" Wilmington. The two quickly became inseparable.

JD is an outdoorsy type of guy, having hobbies such as hiking, mountain biking, trail riding, and rock climbing. He was out rock climbing when he met Alley-she nearly blew his left hand off. Only later did he find out that he had almost put his hand on a sunbathing rattlesnake. She still makes him nervous, mainly because he can't decide if he should be attracted to her or frightened of her.

JD is referred to as the "Kid" of the crew. He's only five ten, which makes him the shortest of the group. His face is youthful looking (he was born July 19,1976 which makes him only 24); this is enhanced by his dark brown shoulder length hair and hazel eyes.

Having grown up around them, JD owns two horses. Strawberry is a red roan and Dorado is a palomino. He also has a blue heeler named Blue, and Alley once stuck him with an orphaned coyote pup for a while.
