2002 Visit to the Philippines
Saturday, 11th January 2003 - I walked through the village checking children's sizes so I can sort clothes for next week. Of course I stopped to spend some time with Mary and her friends. The clothing they have is enough to bring anyone to tears, it certainly does with me.
On the way back to the roadway Gertrude cornered me, I had to take a photo of her with her new sun hat on, she told me she needed some rice, I told her I would deliver a 'bundle of joy' harpoon (tomorrow) she then asked if I could find her a husband, I told her we were good but not that good. (She is a lovely old lady)
Then it was time to pick up Gloria (our newest girl scout) Gloria is the little down syndrome child (18 years old) who were saw at the house whilst paying our respects for the deceased lady. Picture shows Scout Leader, Dave with Gloria, and our mascots Kassi May and Olga May looking intently out of the van window.
Today we are just about to go out and distribute 1400 pieces of children's clothing, thanks to those who have supported us through this last year.
The scout parade was something to behold, you had to be there to see it to recognise the huge impact we are having in the village with the children being in scouts, the whole school is enrolled and fees were paid for from funds raised in the 300 club. The children have varying degrees of uniform, some have none, some have their mothers uniform, with holes, rips and the like from the years of wear. Never the less the children are proud of their part in the DOLJO SCOUT TROOPS, I know that this is the right way to get through to the village and start by teaching from the bottom up. The children took care of Gloria our little down syndrome which care a 'win win' as Dave would say - 1. Gloria gets to participate in a community activity instead of being locked away. and 2. the scouts learn that it is right to care for the less fortunate in our society.
I can't really say much more apart from the fact that I was so proud to be a part of yesterday's parade and I am thankful to Dave for the amount of time, energy and money he spends on the scouts. I intend to approach our scouting movement when I come home and give them the opportunity of viewing "COMMUNITY SCOUTING' at it's finest.
