2002 Visit to the Philippines
The Girl Scout troop that we sponsor, sorted and packaged 1400 pieces of clothing for the poor in the village. Every child age 12 and under got two pieces of clothing. The Scouts then distributed them. You have to be there to understand the enormity of the project. All the children in the village were lined up along the main road and as we drove up and down twice the lovely girl scouts who initially sorted and packed the clothing handed them out from the back of Dave's dump truck.
I hope the pictures can do some justice to the event, although I doubt it. I guess this is really one you have to see for yourselves.
Dave and I would personally like to thank, RC Corrimal, RC Minnamurra, RC Diamond Head, RC Illawarra Sunrise and each and every 300 club member as well as all the people from Wollongong and surrounds who so kindly donated clothing to make this event possible.
The average cost of purchasing the Ukay Ukay boxes of children's clothing here is .20cents Australian per item (these boxes are purchased from the Salvation Army in the US) Together with the clothing donated from Australia we have probably clothed the little ones 0 - 12 years for a couple of months (Clothes don't last long when they are either not washed - or washed in hash water or sea water).
If we can raise more funds we can purchase more clothes - it is actually better and more cost effective to purchase from Salvation Army at 100kgs at a time than to send from Australia.
Thanks to the funding coming from you and the other members of the 300 Rotary Village and our sisterhood arrangement with 3 other clubs, we are able to cloth the children. The clothing was badly needed.. The fishing village has been the first to suffer because of the downturn in the Philippines The fishermen catch about 2 kgs of fish on a good day this converts to P80 per day or $3.20 AUD for a family of 4- 5 or-6. Small wonder that they need help with clothing, food, shelter medicine, hospitalization and sometimes funeral expenses. There are 425 families in the Rotary Village Program, or about 2500 people in the village.
