George T. Sleggs:
Nellie Darling's Husband and Mabel's Father

George T. Sleggs, 1880s
George Thomas Sleggs was born in 1857. His parents, William Sleggs (born 1817) and Elizabeth Wright Sleggs (born 1829) were both from England and came to America in 1851. By the 1860 New York Census, they were settled as farmers in Geneseo Township, Livingston County, New York.

George one was of 7 children. His oldest sister, Eliza was born in England, but George and the others were born in New York. 1870 Federal Census records show Eliza at age 20, Mary Jane age 17, John (born 1854) age 15, George age 13, "Lilla" age 9 (I suspect this is his sister Elizabeth W. since she is age 19 on the 1880 Census and no Lilla is listed. Perhaps "Lilla" was a nickname?), Charles A. (born 1862) age 7. George Paddock, farm laborer, is also listed under the Sleggs household. The value of real estate owned is $3750, and value of personal estate listed at $2200.

By the 1880 Census, George still lived at home and worked on the family farm. His father William was dead, but his mother Elizabeth Sleggs was only 57 and the head of household. Also at home were John W. (age 25), Elizabeth W. (age 19), Charles A. (age 17), and a new sister - Winifred (age 9). By then, Mary Jane had married Chester Armstrong and was out on her own. I never found out what happened to Eliza.

George married Nellie Darling shortly after this time period. They lived on "Darling Farm" on Reservoir Road in Geneseo. According to the 1917 Livingston Farm Directory, they grew wheat and beans there. George and Nellie had only one child: Mabel Darling Sleggs, who was born in 1885.

The next available census records are from 1920, which show George and Nellie at age 63 and 59. By the 1930 Federal Census, George was a widower and age 73. According to Georgia Feasel, George Sleggs died of a bee sting. We are unsure of the year. His sensitivity to bees was passed on to his grandson George Sleggs Carmichael and great-granddaughter Joanne Damboise.

George kept numerous diaries throughout the years, and they contain a wealth of information about the family and daily farm life. Georgia has 26 of these diaries in her possession. Between the two of us, we will try to publish some of the notable entries here. Interestingly enough, the day Mabel was born in 1885, George only notes "Baby girl born today".
