She married Louis Getzinger (German background, born 1863) and had three children: Mary, Howard and Howell. Elizabeth W. Sleggs Getzinger lived until 1909. The 1910 Census shows Louis, Mary (age 21) and Howell (age 15)living together. I imagine that Louis died between 1920 and 1930, although the dates are unknown. I think Howard may have died as an infant.
Howell R. Getzinger was born in January 1895. Mabel Sleggs was Howell's school teacher during the 1907-8 School Year at Geneseo, NY School District No. 7, according to a fascinating school souvenir booklet. 1920 Federal Census records show Howell living as a farm laborer on Reservoir Road with his maiden sister Mary S. Getzinger, age 31 and his father Louis, age 56. According to 1930 Federal Census records, he continued to live with his sister Mary, age 40. I was also able to view Howell's World War I Draft Registration Card (filled out at age 22). His closest relative listed was Louis Getzinger, his father.
The Getzinger name went through numerous changes on the census throughout the years. It first appears on the 1860 Census as "Gisinger". The household includes Christian and Mary, both from Germany. Christian's occupation is "laborer". They are listed right after Riley Darling and his family on the Census roll. Next I found it listed as "Ketginger" on the 1870 Census while I happened to be searching someone else. During that time, the household consisted of Christian (43) and Marianne (41), both from Baden Baden, Germany. Their children were Edward (9), Louis (7) and George (4). By the 1880 Census, the name had morphed to "Goetzinger". The household was: Christian (53), Mary (51), Edward (19), Lewis (17), George (13) and Christian B. (11). Unfortunately, 1890 and 1900 Census records were destroyed so I am unable to trace the name further. I can only imagine that the Census takers couldn't understand Christian's German accent, and thus the reason for the various versions of "Getzinger".
