George and Nellie Sleggs' Only Child:
Mabel Darling Sleggs Carmichael

Baby Mabel Sleggs

Mabel Darling Sleggs Carmichael was born on October 10, 1885, the only child of George and Nellie Sleggs. She attended Geneseo Normal School during the week, and according to George Sleggs' 1901 diary, he would pick her up on Fridays to bring her back home. Mabel often brought friends home with her, and on April 4, 1901, she invited Ina Carmichael to Darling Farm (did Ina introduce her uncle James to Mabel??). After graduating, Mabel became a teacher at Geneseo School District No. 7 (click here to see a fascinating School Souvenir from that time) before marrying James J. Carmichael on December 15, 1908. Mabel was 23 years old at the time.

James and Mabel had four children: James J. Jr, Ruth Onalee, George Sleggs and Jean Darling. Their first home was 29 Rainier Street in Rochester. They later moved to the family home on 276 Seneca Parkway, where the children grew up.

Diane remembers that Granny was a prim and proper lady, but loved to say the word "shit". If she said the phrase in front of her children, Jean Marquardt would fluster and say, "MOTHER! Not in front of the children!". Granny would reply, "Quiet, Jean! Nothing quite expresses it like 'shit'". Years later, that became a private joke between Diane and Jean.

Mabel Sleggs Carmichael died in her sleep from heart failure just 7 months after James' death, on January 7, 1963. Uncle James said that she was simply lost without her husband. Mabel is buried in Temple Hill Cemetery in Geneseo. View Mabel's Funeral Card
