Jean and Herb lived at 72 Beresford Road in Rochester, NY for many years before building their retirement dream home at 4260 North Road in Geneseo, just down the street from the Farm. They created a haven in the country, with at least 3 crab ponds for Herb's fishing adventures and a large 3-acre pond they named "Darling Lake" in honor of Jean's ancestors. Jean proudly tended to her gardens, especially her tomatoes, which she loved. She was especially good at canning her own fresh tomato sauce and making blackberry jam from the berries gathered along the long driveway. Jean also loved to identify various birds and wildflowers on their property.
Jean worked as an office manager for many years at Elmwood Medical Associates for Drs. McVeigh, Trunfio and Marino. She was on her way back from a holiday event on December 20, 1983 when she was struck and killed by a drunk driver just days before her planned retirement. Her obituary reads as follows: "Mrs. Jean Marquardt, 62, of 4260 North Rd., Geneseo, died of injuries she received from a two car accident in Rush at the intersection of Rte. 15 and the ramp of 390, on December 20. She was office manager for Elmwood Medical Associates in Rochester. Survivors are her husband, Herbert; one son, James Marquardt, of Geneseo; three daughters, Diane McClements of Lewiston, Niagara County; Jeanne Bernstein of Southboro, Mass.; and Linda Marquardt of Malden, Mass.; two brothers, James Carmichael of Rochester and George Carmichael of North Cohocton, Steuben County. Funeral services were held Friday in Geneseo United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial in Temple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Geneseo United Methodist Church Fund or the charity of one's choice. Mrs. Marquardt was a descendent of the Sleggs, Whaples and Darling families, who owned land and a home on Reservoir and North Roads, Geneseo. The Marquardts built their home on the land of their ancestors on North Road. In Geneseo's 150th anniversary edition in September 1982, Mrs. Marquardt was helpful in furnishing pictures of several of her ancestors for Sanders Publications."
