Throughout his teen years, Jim worked for his father's business "Herb's Service". He graduated from Utica College in 1976 with a degree in biology. A few years later, he met his future wife, Jean-Marie Ferrara at a local bar called the Penfield Grill. They were introduced by a group of guys that Jim lived and played baseball with, who knew Jean from high school. Jim and Jean-Marie got married a year later on May 17, 1980 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester.
James Ian Marquardt was born on December 2, 1980 (much to the delight of the entire Marquardt family who hadn't had a baby since Carrie was born in 1972). Erika Lynn was born a short time later, on July 7, 1982. Georgia Feasel found a letter (typed, of course!) dating 7/8/82 from Jean Marquardt to her brother James Carmichael announcing Erika's birth: "Dear James, just a quick note to let you know that Jean Marie finally delivered a baby girl on July 7th which is also Shelley's and Lois' birthday. She arrived at 7:55am after a very rough time and had to be sectioned again. They made her go through a long and hard labor before they knew she could not deliver normally. I think they should have moved along faster as Jean is wiped out from it all. Her name is Erika Lynn and she weighed 20-1/2 inches and 8 lbs. 9 oz. She had XXXXXXX Just came back to machine and can't remember what else I was going to say so will close with news. Love, Jean."
Jim and Jean built a modular ranch house on North Road, between the Farm and the Marquardt house. Jean and Herb could still walk to Jim and Jean's house at that time, since I-395 had not yet been constructed. The young Marquardt family lived in Geneseo for 2 years before finding a house in Penfield, where they stayed for 18 years before building their dream house in Webster in 2003.
Jim worked at Control Data and Prime Computers before getting in at the ground floor at Paychex in 1991. His father, Herb, was always so proud of Jim's achievements at Paychex and loved to boast about Jim's friendship with Tom Golisano, Paychex founder and hopeful New York Governor.
Jim has always loved to hunt and fish, and the family photo albums have numerous photographs of Jim with his catches. Because of his love of the water, Jim purchased a cottage on Pebble Beach Road at Conesus Lake in 1987. Since then, his cottage has been the center of family activities and parties, and we are all so grateful to have such a wonderful, fun meeting place.
