Herb was very proud of his property, and spent hours and hours each week mowing the lawns and maintaining the gardens. He wrestled with the omnipresent cattails in the pond, often paying to have them dug out professionally. A family of Canada geese moved onto the island sometime during the mid-1990s, and returned to raise a new family every spring. Herb enjoyed watching them from his window in the den, and often fed them corn. Herb and Jean also maintained several bird feeders, including one for hummingbirds and a martin house, and a salt lick for local deer.
