Darling Farm: George and Nellie Sleggs' Family Home
George and Nellie Sleggs lived and worked at Darling Farm at the corner of Reservoir Road and North Road in Geneseo. After both died, Mabel Carmichael inherited the property and spent weekends there. The Marquardt children affectionately called it "The Farm", and remember visiting it many weekends, alternating between the Marquardt cottage on Conesus Lake and The Farm. Diane remembers that The Farm held many old artifacts from Mabel's time as a schoolteacher. Diane used to love to read the primers, and remembers sitting on her father Herb's lap, reading a particular witch story. The old-fashioned school desks on the dock at Jean and Herb Marquardt's "Darling Lake" were obtained from The Farm also.
The concrete steps shown in several of the pictures have since been removed by the new owners. Georgia Feasel remembers that her mother would not allow her to play on them since they were too close to the road. Boardy Lowe remembers that the night the Getzinger's farm burned, he and Jean Carmichael Marquardt stood on the steps and watched the action.
