Note:
In my unit plan,
The Voyage Home, I focus on the following computer competencies from those required by my grade level above.
-
| 5.01 Respond to reading, listening, viewing experiences orally,
artistically, dramatically, through various formats (print, graphical, audio,
video, multimedia, web based). | -
The learner will interact with the technology in many ways by reading,
listening, and viewing a variety of web sites as well as watching video
and listening to audio sources.
|
| 5.02 Produce media in
various formats (print,
graphical, audio, video, multimedia, web based) appropriate to audience and purpose. | -
The learner will produce one page linked to the class web page on The
Odyssey by Homer.
|
| 5.05 Credit sources in
all print, non print, and electronic products. | -
All student pages must include a bibliography section citing sources.
|
| 5.06 Apply fair use copyright
guidelines (Copyright Law, P. L. 94-553) in all projects. | -
All students will abide by fair use and copyright guidelines on their purposes.
|
All lesson plans in this unit focus on some aspect of these four computer
competencies. Lessons that are highly rich with computer skills are
Lesson Two,
Lesson Seven,
Lesson Twelve,
Lesson 17,
Lesson 22, and
Lesson 27.

10.2 List/Use school television resources that support the content and grade level curriculum
- List available school television resources and their correlation to
your appropriate grade level curriculum and computer skills competencies.
| Video Resources | Television, Cable, Video Tape, Video Disc,
and Online Digital Video |
| Cable in the Classroom | http://www.ciconline.org/ This is an excellent resource for curriculum centered television.
If you are a Cable in the Classroom member you have copyright clearances
of one year or longer. Cable in the classroom programs may be taped
by anyone, at home or at school, with or without a request. There
are no limits on frequency of their use, and they may be saved for the
length of clearance. Fair Use allows taping for educational purposes,
as long as the tapes are shown only once within ten days of taping and
are erased after 45 days. |
| Odyssey channel | http://www.odysseychannel.com 1 year of rights for cable in the classroom users. Others have
restricted access.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Shown: May 26, 2000
Grades: 6-12
Curriculum for Language Arts: Demonstrates competence in speaking
and listening as tools for learning.
How it fits: It provides a wealth of information on the 1800's.
It is a good example of how literary works reflect the culture and time
period.
Video clip available on computer: http://www.odysseychannel.com/sleepyhollow/index.html |
| Discovery channel | http://www.discovery.com/ 1 year of rights for cable in the classroom users. Others have
restricted access.
The Red Badge of Courage Shown: April 17, 2001
Grades: 9-12
Curriculum for Language Arts: Investigate and report on ways
in which a writer has been influenced by historical events. Critique
characters' motives. Pose alternative interpretations to literary and nonliterary
texts. Distinguish between primary and secondary source material.
How it fits: This video has interviews with war veterans and
this is contrasted to the views of Henry Flemming the main character of
the book. It gives students and opportunity to evaluate and make
their own decisions.

| A&E Classroom | http://www.aande.com/class/ 2 years of rights for cable in the classroom users. Others have
fair use guidelines.

Lesson Plan is available to go with this video:
http://www.aande.com/class/admin/study_guide/archives/aetv_guide.0506.html This program gives you insight into the 19th century woman, and the
struggles and problems being faced during that time. |
Note:
At the present time, the above television resources do not work with the
unit plan that I have written for The Odyssey, but I feel other units could
utilize some of the above resources when my students are studying the short
story, the novel, and drama. I am aware of the resources out there
and feel after proper viewing and analysis I will make the decision which
ones would best suit ninth graders in my English I class.
- Develop materials for better implementation of television-supplimented lesson plans (activities)
At present I am using the television as a source of technology in four of my lesson plans in this unit. They are Lesson
1,
Lesson 23, and
Lesson 24, and
Lesson 27.
In
Lesson 1, I used a self produced 2.15 minute video to introduce my unit plan.
In
Lesson 23 and
Lesson 24, I used the video tape of
The Odyssey to review the unit with my students.
In
Lesson 27, I have my students recite a 12 line portion of
The Odyssey, on video tape.
I feel this will be a beneficial step for my students to learn to be on camera
as well as seeing me on camera. The students will be doing more than
just viewing a movie because they will be filling out a review sheet while
they are watching the video. This video can be put in their portfolio
as part of their course work and a record of their public speaking ability.
- Develop an assessment tool to evaluate student learning via school television resources.
- This is a worksheet they can fill out as they watch the video, I
will take up this worksheet and give them a grade on it. This will
help me to understand how much they have comprehended of the movie, and how
much they have remembered from their readings. We will go over it as
a class, and then it can be returned to students, after they correct their
sheets they will have a valuable study guide for there final exam on this
unit.

10.3 Access resources for planning instruction available via telecommunications
(e.g., experts, lesson plans, authentic data, curriculum materials).
-
- Develop an annotated listing of URL's that correlate
to your appropriate grade level curriculum and computer skills competencies.
Section Seven in my
Unit Plan uses many web sites. Listed below are examples of lesson plans for instruction found on the internet.
- Develop examples of curriculum design that incorporate technology such
as e-mail, the Internet, video-conferencing or web-page development.
My Unit Plan,
The Voyage Home, incorporates email, the Internet, video, and web page development.
Web sites used
The above web sites are used in
Lesson Two,
Lesson Seven,
Lesson Twelve,
Lesson 17,
Lesson 22, and
Lesson 27. Video resources are listed in competency 10.2. The lessons that support video resources are
Lesson 1,
Lesson 23, and
Lesson 24,
Lesson 27
. Other resources listed in section seven of my
unit plan and are available to all students,
and may be used on an independent bases to complete their individual research
assignments.
- Compile and organize appropriate telecommunication resources into a usable off-line format.

10.4 Locate, evaluate, and select appropriate teaching/learning resources
and curriculum materials for the content area and target audience, including
computer based products, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents
and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature and other print sources.
- Create a curriculum design unit plan to correlate computer skills with other curricular objectives.
The Journey Home
This unit was designed for English I students studying The Odyssey
by Homer. These Ninth Grade Language Arts students will investigate
Odysseus' journey as he travels the islands surrounding his home.
This is a lesson about the journey of life, and will incorporate
technology as students journey to publish a class web page which personalizes
their exploration of this epic poem. The estimated time for this
unit is six weeks, since most schools are on a semester program for ninth
grade english.
I believe this will be an exciting way for students to connect the ancient
world to the global world.

The Odyssey
Available on all formats
This is a small screen adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, that the
critics have given 5 stars. I have personally seen the video and liked
it. The only issue parents may have is one scene where Odysseus is
bathing and Calypso shows a little bit of skin. Otherwise, I found
it to be an excellent movie.
