Lesson Twenty Seven: The Voyage Home

1. Focus and Review

• Student journals
• Discussion of journals
• Video camera is set up on a tripod, and tape is inserted so that we can begin taping student presentations.
  
 

2. Objectives

• Standard Course of Study Goal English I:

• 1.02 Respond reflectively (individually and in groups) to a variety of expressive texts (e.g., memoirs, vignettes, narratives, diaries, monologues, personal responses) in a way that offers an audience: 
  
  • The learner will show a personal reaction to the text with a sense of how that comes from careful consideration of the text. (Journals)

• 4.01 Evaluate the effectiveness of communication by:
• creating an additional set of standards and applying them to the presentation/product. (Presentation

• 6.01 Demonstrate an understanding of conventional written and spoken language (Presentation, and Invitations)
       
        

 
• Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:

• 3.3 Select and use technological tools for class assignments, projects and presentations (presentation)

• 5.02 Produce media in various formats such as multimedia.  This is demonstrated through students final draft turned in today (Invitations)

 
• This lesson is an evaluative lesson because I am testing students ability to recite text in a public speaking lesson.  This public speaking exercise allows students to see themselves on video and evaluate their ability to appear on camera.  When complete I feel students will have a greater understanding of video and what it takes to make one. This lesson enables students to evaluate each others abilities, and to experience grading with a rubric.

• Materials that are a Video camera, student journals, graded exams, students, who have memorized their poems, Video tape to record on, permission slips from parents, 30 minutes of computer lab time,  printer and copier in media.
  
   

3. Teacher Input

• Teacher sits in back of room at camera as students come one at a time to do their video clip.  While students are doing their presentation, teacher fills out a rubric. 
  

4. Guided Practice

• Class also fills out one notebook sheet with everyone's name on it, and they gage with the rubric, what they feel how that classmate did on their presentation.
  
• Students go to computer Lab after all classmates have performed their videos. 
  

5.  Independent Practice

• Students work independently to personalize invitations to our open house event on Thursday.
  

6. Closure

• Go over objectives of the day. 
• Today we learned how to be a public speaker on camera.
• Today we learned to evaluate ourselves and others using a rubric.
• Today we have showed respect to our fellow students by being quiet while they are presenting their presentations.
• Today we have taken ownership, as we invite parents to view our work on Thursday.
• Today we examined our cognitive process with our question of the day.

Bibliography:   I am using this textbook in my unit plan.  Since I used the teachers edition when creating this unit, some ideas seen in this unit may have been influenced by what I read in the teachers edition.

Ideas for email exercise came from:
