Lesson Twenty Three: The Voyage Home

2. Objectives

Standard Course of Study Goal English I:

1.02 Respond reflectively (individually and in groups) to a variety of expressive texts (e.g., memoirs, vignettes, narratives, diaries, monologues, personal responses) in a way that offers an audience:

The learner will show a personal reaction to the text with a sense of how that comes from careful consideration of the text. (Journals )

5.01 Read and analyze various literary works by:

producing creative responses that follow the conventions of a specific genre and using appropriate literary devices for that genre. (Comparison of poem to Video)

5.02 Demonstrating increasing comprehension and ability to respond personally to texts by selecting and exploring a wide range of genres in this case the epic poem. (Comparison of epic poem to video)

2.02 Explain commonly used terms and concepts that:

The student will be able to clearly state the subject to be defined and be able to classify terms and identify distinguishing characteristics in an organized manner with efficient details. (Teacher Update)

Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:

5.01 Respond to reading, listening, viewing experiences orally, artistically, dramatically, through various formats (print, graphical, audio, video, multimedia, web based.

4.01 Identify information needs and formulate questions about those needs.

5.02 Produce media in various formats such as multimedia. Three students will work on the computer web project while class participates in the lesson.

This lesson is a comparison lesson because students are watching a video and then comparing what they saw in the video to what they learned from the epic poem.

Materials needed are Student journals, SUP board, Overhead, Overhead pens, Clean overhead sheets, White paper, Markers and pencils, Textbook Elements of Literature, student notebooks, Overhead of Venn Diagram, Movie the Odyssey, and Classroom computer and sign up sheet.

3. Teacher Input

This time would be used to wrap up the unit on the Odyssey and to answer questions students have to clarify the end of the Odyssey unit.

4. Guided Practice

Students watch video tape and fill out review sheet as they watch.
Group discussion using Venn Diagram to compare the Move and the epic poem.

5. Independent Practice

Homework: memorize 12 lines of the Odyssey by next tuesday.

6. Closure

Go over objectives of the day.

Today we reviewed and wrapped up the main ideas from our unit on the Odyssey.

Today we watched and analyzed a video tape on the Odyssey, and we filled out a review sheet..
Today we have compared the Odyssey to the epic poem and found how they are similar and different.

Today we have begun to memorize 12 lines of the Odyssey epic for our Video project.

Informal Question and Answer time with Students

Question of the Day and your journal question for tomorrow is:
Comparison: Compare the movie and the book version of the Odyssey? In what ways was the two versions the same and in what ways were they different?

This Lesson Plan represents a basic outline of what will be covered during the Twenty Third day. As with any lesson, this is a work in progress and will be altered as need arises. All ideas present come from many years of study as a college student and working professional, any thoughts expressed here came from my brain and the knowledge I have gained.

This lesson plan was created with computer competencies in mind.
In order to support this lesson I as a teacher must have knowledge of
2.0 Set up, Maintenance and Trouble shooting.
8.3 setting up and operating a videocassette player and TV monitor.
8.8 consumer issues including identification of available media communication resources.
9.1 Use a linear multimedia presentation
10.2 Use school television resources that support the curriculum.
In this unit I am using the video tape, The Odyssey.

This is a small screen adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, that the critics have given 5 stars. I have personally seen the video and liked it. The only issueparents may have is one scene where Odysseus is bathing and Calypso showsskin, it appears she is wearing nothing but they cover her with the bathtub,so you can not see anything.. Otherwise, I found it to be an excellent movie.
