Resources for ESL Students and Teachers
There are many different types of resources available for ESL students and teachers.

http://www.eslpartyland.com/
One of the first stops on a teacher's list might be something called Karin's ESL partyland.  This is a resource that can be used by both students and teachers. Their student pages have over 75 interactive quizzes, 15 discussion forums, and interactive lessons on a variety of topics, a chat room, and lots of great links.  On the teacher side, they provide you with loads of lesson plans and reproducible materials to use in class. They also have discussion forums, ideas for communicative practice activities, a chat room, a job board, links, and more.

One of the ways to help students who have English as a second language is to create environments where they will feel successful.  One idea is for them to have pen pals in their own language.  They can then translate this correspondence so that other students can share in their discoveries.  This validates their language and helps bring their culture into the classroom.

Another option is to find an expert on the subject you are teaching in another language.  This helps other students to realize that experts exist in all languages and can help validate your bi-lingual students.

New Ways of Using Computers in Language
By Tim Boswood, Editor
This collection shows how teachers are exploiting new technologies to help learners develop their language and communications skills. The focus of the volume, however, is on pedagogy, not technology. The activities are featured because they implement sound learning strategies, not because they use the latest technology. Teachers and students can move from easy to more complex applications, using units on word processing and desktop publishing, e-mail and MOOs, the Web, multimedia, concordancing, and other applications.

There are more than educational needs of students.  When taking into consideration the whole student, it is important to have support from your environment.  One such resource on the web is an ESL discussion board.

A word translator though still not the perfect source of translation will at least provide your students with having their basic needs met.
http://ericir.syr.edu/plweb As a teacher it is helpful to have articles that address the issues of teaching English as a second language.  One of the resources available is ERIC.  Eric is a large database of educational articles which provides many resources for teachers.

An example of one of these articles is seen below.  Click the link to the left to view it, and or retrieve this article.

TITLE: Passport: Technology To Help the Middle Grades Second Languages Teachers.
PUBLICATION_DATE: 1990
ABSTRACT: This guide, resulting from a four-site middle school study of the use of computers and related technology in second language instruction, is presented for the use by middle school language teachers. The guide includes lessons, coded to the state teacher handbook for second language instruction, and management hints, sample lesson plans, and other resources. Introductory material includes an overview of the project, a list of project sites, and lists of individuals and software that may be useful resources for classroom teachers. A lesson plan template is also included. Sample lesson plans consist of software lessons for word processing in both French and Spanish courses, for language study in both French and Spanish, and for creative activities, including educational games and word processing utilities. The lesson plans are tied to specific, generally-available computer programs, and contain illustrations of computer screens contained in the programs. An instructional telecommunications network, available to educators in North Carolina, is also described. Suggestions and directions for classroom use of the electronic mail capabilities are offered. An appendix contains illustrated instructions for adapting a television and videocassette recorder for use as a computer monitor. (MSE)
