Lesson Seventeen: The Voyage Home

1. Focus and Review

• Journal Time based on yesterday's question of the day.

2. Objectives

• Standard Course of Study Goal English I:

• 2.04 Form and refine a question for investigation, using a topic of personal choice, and answer that question by using non print sources and using interactive technology. (Exploration of web sites on the Odyssey)

• 3.02 Express an Informed opinion that states clearly a personal view. (Daily Journal Entry).

• Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:

   
• 1.08  Select and use independently both within and outside of school, a variety of resources and formats in this case web based.

• 4.05 Gather information from the most effective resources.

• 5.06  Apply fair use copyright guidelines (Copyright Law, P.L. 94-553) in all projects.

• This lesson is an evoke lesson because students will be completing the rough draft for their web site.    They will build analysis skills as they learn how to use the appropriate steps to place images in their web sites. They will strengthen their knowledge of Netscape Communicator and Word as they work to complete the construction phase.

• Materials needed are student journals, Computer lab 30 students, Netscape Communicator, Netscape Navigator, and Word, a hand out with web addresses, instruction sheet on how to use outliner and editing a web page,  paper, pencils, sticky notes.
  

3. Teacher Input

 
• Review copyright and fair use guidelines with students.
• Discuss any questions with  project rubric with students, and discuss questions and concerns regarding web site project.
• Basic lesson on inserting images into a document using word and Netscape Communicator.  Teach them how a scanner and digital camera operate, and allow them to practice its use while others are finishing their web sites and finishing the exploration process.
   

4. Independent Practice

• Students explore multiple Odyssey web sites.  They get to choose from the list and find things that interest them and that they want to use in their web site.

5. Guided Practice

• Students are guided through use of a scanner and digital camera to capture images.
  

• Students insert images and color into their web sites, while completing the rough draft of their web site.
  

6. Closure

• Go over objectives of the day.
• Today we have begun the process of beginning our web site by exploring the rubric in creating our final product.
• Today we will have learned to use copyright guidelines and fair use guidelines. 
• Today we will have explored a non print source on the web.
• Today we have explored ideas about the Odyssey through the look process by exploring web sites. 
• Today we have learned how to insert images in Word and Netscape.
• Today we have completed the rough draft of our web site project.
