Lesson Two: The Voyage Home
1. Focus and Review
- Journal Time based on yesterday's question of the day.
- Discussion of journals in class.
2. Objectives
- Standard Course of Study Goal English I:
- 2.04 Form and refine a question for investigation, using a topic
of personal choice, and answer that question by using non print sources and
using interactive technology.
- 3.02 Express an Informed opinion that states clearly a personal view. (Daily Journal Entry).
- Standard Course of Study Computer Competency Goal for 9th Grade students:
- 5.01 Respond to reading, listening, viewing experiences orally,
artistically, dramatically, through various formats (web based)
- 5.06 Apply fair use copyright guidelines (Copyright Law, P.L. 94-553) in all projects.
- This lesson is an analysis lesson because we are looking and taking
components from a web site to form a time line, and to determine what is and
is not acceptable as far as copyright law.
- Materials: Student journals, Rubric for web site, Computer lab 30 students, Handout with Link addresses, 30 Lunch Bags.
3. Teacher Input
- Discuss the topic of copyright and fair use. The students will
look at a web site and study the rules regarding fair use and copyright law
at http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/copyright1.html
. Students need to read this web site and discuss rules of fair use
and copyright. There must be a statement on the final product that
fair use was considered. Students must cite there sources that they
use in the construction of their web site. Have students write down
address.
- Go over project rubric with students, and discuss questions and concerns regarding web site project.

5. Independent Practice
- Make a time line on a lunch bag using the web site in previous exercise of Odysseus journey.
- Go through the text and any of those places we will be reading draw
a picture underneath the timeline marker to indicate it is in the text.
Bibliography: This was a lesson plan idea, I read in a magazine of
using lunch bags to make time lines, but this has been some time ago and
I do not know what the source of this article is from.
6. Closure
- Go over objectives of the day.
- Today we have begun the process of beginning our web site by exploring the rubric in creating our final product.
- Today we will have learned to use copyright guidelines and fair use guidelines.
- Today we will have explored a non print source on the web.
- Today we will have begun to get a clearer understanding of the readings
ahead by creating a timeline to guide us through our reading.
- Informal Question and Answer time with Students
- Question of the Day and your journal question for tomorrow is:
- What indicators on a web site help us to know it has valid information?
This Lesson Plan represents a basic outline of what will be covered during
the Second day. As with any lesson, this is a work in progress and
will be altered as need arises. All ideas present come from many years
of study as a college student and working professional, any thoughts expressed
here came from my brain and the knowledge I have gained.
