EDEL466/566 - Computers in Education
Danielle Earley's Introductory Lesson for The Voyage Home
1. Focus and Review
Focus: Bell ringer and Before Class
- On board message on board:
-
Please write your letter to teacher in your writing journal.
Remember your writing rubric will help you in this assignment. When
you finish please read silently until I begin class.
-
I am greeting students at the door and standing in the hallway
outside my door.
-
Take attendance while students are reading while the bell is
ringing.
Review: Class Introduction (Total Time = 15 minutes)
-
State objectives for the day and announce the video we will
be watching. (3 mins..)
-
Show the class the two minute introductory video (2 mins..)
-
After the video is over hand out sideways to each row the
questionnaires. Remind class to be quiet while filling them out so
that all students have privacy. You do not have to put your name on
the questionnaire’sunless you have a particular concern and then you
may write me a note on the bottom. Flip your paper over if you finish
so I know you are through and then sit quietly. (7 mins..)
Computer Questionnaire:
Take up questionnaires so they can be tallied later.
Review: Prior Knowledge through Brainstorming (Total time = 20 minutes)
- Restate objective for this section. In this section, we are
going to explore what you know about computers. This will be the first
step in our project of building a web page. (1 minute)
- On a piece of paper divided in two (demonstrate folding paper
in two) write on the top of the page your name. For the next three minutes,
I want you to free write what you know about computers.
- Now that you have that information, on the other side of the paper we
are going to write what our partner knows about computers. In groups
of two (teacher divides class two by seating arrangement 2, 2,2), one person
shares while the other person listens and takes notes. Then I want you to
switch.
- Have each group share the other person’s knowledge.
This helps the children practice interview skills and contribute information
to the class.
- Teacher can write on overhead main ideas about the computer
that the children are presenting.
2. Objectives
- Stated to students:
- Today in class we will identify and match terms, so that as a class
we will gain knowledge about The Odyssey, Homer and the computer. My
goal is to help you develop some core knowledge that you can build on which
will help you as you read the Odyssey and begin your computer project.
- Standard Course of Study Objective for English I:
- 2.02 The Learner will be able to explain commonly used terms and
concepts clearly and be able to classify terms in an organized manner.
- Standard Course of Study Objective for Computer Competencies:
- Competency Goal 4 The learner will explore and use research processes to meet information needs
- 4.07 Organize and use information.
-
This lesson focuses on:
- The skill of recall is the primary focus of this lesson as an
introductory lesson, I am introduce and identify terms that will be used
in the unit. It also incorporates the skill of comparison because we
are looking at two different sets of terms literary and computer. Finally
it will requires inference because of the brainstorming exercise at the beginning
of the lesson. An analysis question and evaluation question may be
used during this lesson but are not the primary focus of this lesson.
- Resource Materials needed for this lesson are:
- Introductory Video
- Vcr and TV
3. Teacher Input
Recall Lesson (Total time = 15 minutes)
- Restate objective for this section of lesson. Now we
are digging deeper into our prior knowledge and this exercises will help
me know how much technical or recall information you have about two subjects.
- I am going to work out a schedule with the classroom computer
so that we can rotate the classroom computer in 30 minute time slots so that
those who need computer time can have some independent time on the computer.
Only three people can sign up a day, so if you have a time slot use it wisely
it is possible you may only get two turns this six weeks. I will also
set up separate days where we will all go to the lab, if you have extra time
on those days it may be used to work on your project.
- I am impressed with the knowledge of computers that you have shown
in the brainstorming exercise. I feel that we all gained from the knowledge
of our classmates in that sharing time.
- How many People have heard how the computers brain works before?
Okay good. Well then this will expand your knowledge today. A
computer has a brain, and its brain is called the CPU or central processing
unit. Unlike when we think in words inside our minds. The computer
thinks in 01 or 10. So I thought it would be fun today to practice
thinking and organizing like a computer with our term sheet. If you
will flip over your objective for the day sheet, you will find a term sheet
with terms on it. (Now the teacher goes over the terms with the class so
that the class has labeled all the terms). Good Job.
- Step one use overhead sheet and handouts to cover ones and zeros. If it goes in one category
it is a plus and if it goes in another category it is a zero. In truth
terms that go with the Literature the Odyssey are the , and terms that go
with the computer are the zero. Use this time to go over the meanings
of the word with the student definition while the class is sorting.
4. Guided Practice (Total time 10 minutes)
- In this step, student in pencil do two study sheets with definitions with the 10 computer matching and 10 literary words
matching sheets. The teacher will walk around and see what inferences
students are making about the new terms they are learning.
-
During this step, the teacher goes over answers of the check sheet computer matching and literary words on the overhead and tells the students to keep this sheet in their notebooks for these will be on a quiz on friday.
5. Independent Practice (Total time 15 minutes)
- Give students homework handout (copy of web page) and have
them start reading silently. The homework is to find five important
pieces of information about Homer .
6. Closure (Total time 15 minutes)
- Go over class questionnaires with ratios (examples 6/30 have
computer access, 15/30 have used a word processor, 15/30 have used the Internet.
15/30 have used email, 10/30 excited 10/30 scared and 3 don’t care
7/30 are others).
-
Go back over all the objectives of the day.
-
Repeat homework assignment. Now what you are going to
do for tomorrow is read this article and bring in five pieces of information
regarding the Odyssey.
- Question and answer time. Go over Higher Order thinking
Questions, and answer any student questions that arise. These are questions
students can use in their journal time tomorrow.
- Higher Order Thinking Skills Starter Questions:
-
Recall: Who is Homer?
-
Analysis: What are the basic components we will be using in building a web page?
-
Comparison: Compare oral writing and the writing that we do today?
-
Inference: Hypothesize what would have happened if Homer had not translated the Odyssey into text?
-
Evaluation: What would be the best way to design a page layout?
