I have worked as a writer in several different contexts: journalism, including photojournalism; public relations, including advertorials and press kit materials; essays and reports; television voice-overs; theatrical monologues and various fiction genres. I also have extensive experience in translation, in addition to working in editing, copy editing and proofreading.

Once I have all the information I need, I can write 350 to 500 words in 45 minutes. Of course, it's always a pleasure to write longer analytical pieces; but one thing I can do well and quickly is to cut and edit work down to requested specifications.

Skills

  1. Writing is my specialty. Journalism. Promotional materials. Academic reports and essays. Fiction. Humour. Songwriting.

    In English, I have worked for The Review, a weekly paper based in Vankleek Hill, in Eastern Ontario. The publisher is Louise Sproule. Here are sample stories: a snowmobiling adventure starting in Larose Forest, in Eastern Ontario; one on cross-border doctoring, part 1 and part 2 ; and another on CAA Qu�bec's reaction to the handheld cell phone ban in the province. A third article deals with the link between cigarette smuggling and smoking rates in Eastern Ontario and Western Qu�bec. I have also written about international music star Bruno Pelletier.     Other articles in English have appeared in various publications, including one on Guatemala's journey to democracy after the signing of the economic and agrarian peace accords in 1996, as reported in Toward Freedom . Another sample is about point of sale peripherals and software, published in CRN Canada, a computer magazine.     In French, most of my work has been for Le Voyageur, a francophone weekly, where I covered both national and provincial issues as well as local news. While there I won first place for best feature. My editors there were Jacques DesBecquets and Andr� Girouard. I've also published articles in Southern Ontario in Le M�tropolitain and Le R�gional, in French: here is one on official languages and one about women in trades.

  3. Most of my creative writing has been published or produced in French. My first novel, La Delphin�e, was published by Prise de parole in Sudbury, Ontario. In 1998, I worked with the Great Canadian Theatre Company as one of ten playwrights on the bilingual 10 x 10 project of The Next Stage, coproduced with the National Arts Centre. The artistic director at the time was Micheline Chevrier and my monologue was titled �L'�veil de Sycorax�. (For sample translations of the latter into English, click here). Other projects, such as my second novel, a collection of songs in French about women in Canada and a collection of short stories, have been funded by the Ontario Arts Council (1997 and 1998).

  4. Public relations is another field I enjoy. Professionally, I've written press releases and edited manuscripts for Prise de parole. I've also done volunteer promotional writing for the LEAF Sudbury Person's Day Breakfast in both English and French, as well as for Village International Sudbury and La Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario. I've also worked as editor of Acc�s-m�dias, the newsletter of the F�d�ration des gens de la presse de l'Ontario. Later, I helped out at the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) as the workshops coordinator for their 20th anniversary conference, Convergence '98 (contact person: Saul Chernos). Most recently, I have worked as volunteer editor of L'Oyez, the newsletter of the Club Richelieu Toronto. Here is an example.

  5. Translation (English to French, French to English). Clients include Wine-Art (contact person: Dan Noel). I have also worked with Matrix Research and the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association.

  6. Research. I got my M.A. from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (Carleton University, 1992) and was an Ontario Graduate Scholar (1989-91).

    My area of expertise is Canadian trade policy. The thesis I wrote, Tinsel and Fleur de lys, combined my interests in political economy, international trade, marketing and especially, cultural industries: As a topic for my final research paper, I chose to explore exports and marketing of French-language Quebec film in the 1980s in the context of global oligopolistic market structures.

  7. HTML and Photoshop. When using WYSWYG software, I will go back to the source code and clean it up as needed.
