Most Christians today believe that we are living in the last days, the antichrist is alive and well, the rapture will soon take place and the second coming of Jesus is around the corner. They are completely wrong on all accounts. Jesus emphatically, explicitly, and clearly declared that His return would take place within the lifetime of His disciples. The authors of the New Testament said that they and they alone were living in the last days, that is to say the last days of the Old Covenant Age, not the world. The Bible says the world will never end. The antichrist is not some man living in Europe now, but was rather the great apostasy that Jesus warned His disciples would take place in ther lifetime. Did you know that the word antichrist never even appears in the Book of Revelation? Did you know that the Beast of Revelation was Nero Caesar?
Preterism is the view of eschatology (doctrine of last things) that maintians all Bible prophecies have already been fulfilled. The prophecies regarding the second coming, resurrection, rapture, the judgment, etc were fulfilled during the destruction of Jerusalem (66-70 A.D.) The Preterist view of Bible prophecy is the only view that gives serious consideration to the numerous time statements assigned to these end time prophecies.
Eschatology is important because it affects how Christians work in the Kingdom of God. It affects how they engage the culture. If Christians believe the end is near then they will not have a long term vision for the future. Where the people lack vision, they perish. They will therefore settle for the lesser of two evils in politics and they will send their kids to public schools. Why polish brass on a sinking ship? Eschatology is also important because at least one fourth of the New Testament is related to Bible Prophecy. God does not waste words. Christians need to go to the Bible to learn about eschatology instead of listening to their favorite preachers. Be a Berean. Dig deeper into Scripture.
