| ACTS 1:9-11 | ||||
| 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. (Acts 1:9-11)
The passage above is often brought up to refute a first century fulfillment of the Soecond Coming of Christ. It is argued that Jesus did not return visibly as he went up to heaven. Many postmillennialist see Acts 1:9-11 as proof of a still future (from our time) return of Christ. Yet, by allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture it is obvious that Jesus did return in like manner circa 70 A.D. He is said to have ascended with a cloud while being seen. The passages that speak of His return have both of these qualities. In other words when He would return it would be on clouds and seen by people. All of the following passages refer to the Second Coming in the first century and they have the same textual fabric as Acts1:9-11. Therefore, Jesus DID return in like manner circa 70 A.D. Speaking to His disciples Jesus said: For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. (Matthew 16:27-28) Speaking to His disciples Jesus said: Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matthew 24:30) Speaking to Caiaphas Jesus said: Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. (Matthew 26:64) Writing to seven churches in Asia Minor John wrote: Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth (literally - "land") will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. (Revelation 1:7) Home Preterism Preterist Links |
