What is Family Medicine:
Family Medicine has also been called "community practice" in Uganda, and is also called “general practice” in some places in the  world.  But whatever it is named, the principle is the same:  family physicians are doctors who see people of all ages, including children, adolescents, adults, and pregnant women. 

The Masters of Medicine in Family Medicine:
The Department of Family Medicine at Makerere University offers a 3-year masters program.  To be eligible for this masters program, physicians must have completed medical school, internship, and at least 3 years of clinical practice after internship. 

Our Mission:
The mission of the Department of Family Medicine at Makerere University is to train physicians  who have the following qualities: 
     - are specialists in the most common health problems that people face
     - are advocates for not only patients, but also for families and communities

Family Medicine in East Africa:
Now is an exciting and important time in East Africa, because several countries are just starting family medicine postgraduate training programs.  In addition, there are several new professional organizations that have started recently to support the development of generalist training in these countries.  You can learn more about these following programs:
