This is a brief history of the Department of Community Practice at Makerere University:

1989:  The Department of Community Practice began its postgraduate Master of Medicine (M.Med) training program.

- this was under the leadership of the Faculty of Medicine

- financial and human resources were supplied through a SIDA grant in affiliation with Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada

- Dr. Ross from Canada served as the first Head of Department

1990 - 1994:  in total 11 postgraduate students enrolled in the M.Med. program between 1990 and 1994

1994 - 1999:  only 1 postgraduate student was enrolled in the M.Med program between 1994 and 1999

2003 - 2004:  during the 2003-2004 academic year there were 14 senior house officers enrolled in the M.Med program (1 in the first year, 7 in the second year, 6 in the third year)

Consultants  and visiting lecturers who have contributed to the Department of Community Practice at Makerere:

April 2001:  Dr. Nick Busing (Chair and Professor of the Family Medicine Department at U. of Ottawa) joined the department as a Visiting Professor, conducted an "external review" of the department, and submitted his findings to the Makerere Faculty of Medicine. 

2002 - 2003:  Dr. Ian Livingstone joined the department as a Lecturer (with support from VSO, a UK-based NGO).

Sept 2003 - current:  Dr. Tania John joined the department as a Lecturer (with support from VSO, a UK-based NGO).

Sept 2003 - Jan 2004:  Dr. Michael Chin joined the department as a Visiting Lecturer (with support from GHETS, a USA-based NGO).

Jan 2004:  Dr. Cindy Haq (from the University of Wisconsin, USA) visited the department (and helped to run a 1-month course for University of Wisconsin students at Makerere University Institute of Public Health).
