Checklist

Once you have decided what type of fish you want and have purchased your tank, then next thing you want to do is set up the tank.  (Remember that this will be done before you purchase fish.)  In some cases, depending on where you bought your tank from, you may or may not have all of the following items listed below. Some tanks are not sold with undergravel filters or some type of other biological filtration.

Links

Each link below that you click on will take you to a description of that particular item . Check out each link and see if you have what is listed or feel that you need it for your tank set-up.

Lighting

Heater(s)

Under gravel filter and other biological filtration

Air pump or power head for the under gravel filter

Some type of stress coat for the fish

External/Internal Filter (Optional)

Gravel (sand or rock)

Ammonia Remover

Thermometer

All of these things are usually included in a tank purchase and all should be working properly.  Set up of these items will be talked about in the next chapter.

Once you have verified the things you need for your tank, click here to go to page 2 of the checklist for some other things to consider. Or, if you would like you can move onto Tank Setup.
