Heaters range in all shapes, sizes, and colors (heard
that before). Some heaters hang on the back and others are completely
submersible. They also range in wattage and quality. Personally,
I have had the most luck with submersible heaters. The main thing
you want to consider when purchasing a heater is wattage. You want
to make sure that the heater is strong enough to heat your entire tank
and keep the water temperature stable. Once you get over 60 gallons,
you will probably want to use 2 heaters. The wattage of the heater
is usually printed right on the box and your local pet store should be
able to tell you what wattage is right for your size tank. Some heaters
even print the proper heater for a tank right on the box. As far
as what kind of heater you choose, I would have to say that if will be
your personal preference.
Always remember that any heater you purchase for
your tank cannot be operated out of water. If you do, you will blow
the heater. Using a busted heater will also be detrimental to your
fish. Once your purchase a heater your will want to open the box
and make sure that the heater is not cracked or busted. This will
ensure that you do not have to make extra trips to the pet store.
