    There are all different types of water filters and all do the same thing.  Where they differ in in size and price.  The clear free water filter is a cheap way to go and is a great filter for smaller tanks.  Cotton fits inside and air bubbles are used to suck water in through the filter and into the cotton.

    The hanging filter sits on the rim of the tank and sucks water up through the spout, pushes it through some type of filter media, and back into the tank.  The canister filter sits on the floor or underneath the tank and works similar to the hanging filter.

    All filters are effective in helping keep your water clean and clear.  The thing you will want to consider when buying one is what size to get.  The ratings of each pump is usually listed right on the box and your local pet store should be able to tell you what size is right for your tank.
