This week's Fanfic excerpt is from the story, To Find The Truth.  In this tale Chris goes missing and Eve must find answers to his whereabouts.  Along the way, she finds out more about Chris than she ever knew before. She discovers that there is a lot more to the man than she ever imagined.

Eve sighed as she stepped into the Recovery Room. She walked over to the bar and frowned as she ordered an herbal tea. She stared into the dark liquid in her cup getting lost before Victor lightly tapped her on the shoulder.

"Can I interrupt?"

"I want you to," She smiled as she turned to face him, "Have you been able to find out anything?"

"I know more now than I did yesterday, but it's still not the answers you're looking for."

"What do you mean?" She asked as she raised the cup of steaming tea to her lips.

"Well, Chris didn't leave by train, plane, boat or rented automobile. But there's another piece of news. A car with his VIN number was pulled out of Lake Erie early this morning. It was empty, no trace of anything inside."

"This gets stranger and stranger."

"Yes it does. Were you able to find anything at the hospital?"

"No, nothing. It's like he never even existed. His files have been deleted from the GH mainframe, his personnel jacket has vanished, and all Alan could tell me was that he received a resignation via fax the night Chris disappeared."

"Is the fax still at GH? Perhaps we could trace it."

"Alan placed it in his personnel jacket which has disappeared. This all sounds like someone is going to a lot of trouble to make it virtually impossible to find Chris."

"Almost anyone can be found, Eve. And if they can't, you can always find a reason why they cannot be found. You just have to have a little faith and patience."

"Patience is something I have always been short of, Victor," Eve frowned, "And it only makes it worse that it's my best friend we're talking about."

"We'll find you some answers, Eve. Trust me."

"I do, Victor," She smiled, "I do. I knew I could trust you with this. I didn't know anyone else I could turn to."

Victor smiled, "I'm glad you feel that way." He gently patted her hand on the bar, "I'll check with some of my contacts at the Agency. See what they can turn up for me."

"Thank you, Victor. I really appreciate this," Eve smiled as she watched the older man slip away. She looked back to her tea and hoped that the answers would come sooner rather than later.

"Anything new about Chris?" Karen asked as she stepped into the on call room, seeing Eve sitting at the table working on chart review.

"No," Eve frowned, "I don't get it at all. I know Chris is secretive and is a little strange, but this is insane."

"I'll agree with you for once. Something about this doesn't seem right," Karen agreed as she pulled out a chair and took a seat, "I just find it funny that he's up and gone in less than twenty-four hours."

"You were on duty with him the day he disappeared, right?"

"Yeah," Karen nodded, "There was nothing unusual about it. It was just your average day, lot of patients and headaches."

"Did he run into anyone? Meet with anyone? Get any phone calls?"

Karen shook her head, "No, nothing." She paused, "On second thought, there was one that seemed a little odd."

"One what?"

"Phone call. We were in the ER, and Chris was paged to the telephone. I was standing nearby. I don't make it habit to eavesdrop, but when Chris picked up the phone, his demeanor changed a little."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know. It was almost like relief. It was a quick conversation before he hung up and went back to work. The day went on as normal, and then that night, he just vanished."

"Do you know who called him?"

"I have no idea. Colleen was the first one to answer the phone. She might be able to tell you more."

"Thanks, Karen. This might be the break I was looking for," Eve said quickly as she left her charts on the table and sprinted out of the room. She rushed down the hall, finding Colleen speaking with Gabriella.

"Colleen, can I speak with you for just a minute?"

"Sure," Colleen said as she turned to smile at Eve, "What can I do for you?"

"You answered a phone call the other day at the ER desk for Chris. Do you remember it?"

"Yeah," Colleen nodded, "They asked for Chris directly."

"Do you have any idea who it was?"

"No, I'm sorry," Colleen frowned, "I don't have a clue."

"Do you know what they wanted with Chris?"

"No, the man just asked for Chris, and that was it," Colleen frowned, "Sorry."

"It's okay, Colleen," Eve offered a light smile, "I just was hoping for some answers."

"I hope you can find them," Colleen smiled apologetically before she went back to her duties.

Eve turned and spotted Ian as he watched her closely. She let her shoulders drop as she approached him, her face falling in a frown. Ian wrapped his arms around her and gently squeezed, "Frustrated?"

"You have no idea," Eve sighed as she leaned into him, "Where could he be?"

"I don't know, but we will find out. Somehow."

Eve closed her eyes and paused for a moment before she took a step back quickly, "Jack....Chris' brother, Jack. We talk to him. He might know something."

"After you," Ian said with a smile as he followed her towards the elevators.

Eve stepped into the motorcycle shop and glanced around at the occupants. Alison immediately glowed with a smile as she saw her friend.

"Eve, welcome to our little bike shop," Alison smiled as she stepped forward, "And cafe of course."

"Of course," Eve smiled, "It looks great. Things are really looking up for you and Jamal now."

"Yes they are," Alison smiled, "So what brings you by? You and Dr. Irish gonna buy a bike?"

"Not today," Ian smiled as he spotted Jack, "Actually we want to have a word with your hired help."

Jack glanced up from the motorcycle he was working on, "Hey now, whatever happened I swear I didn't do it."

"We just want to ask you some questions," Eve said softly.

"Why don't I like the sound of that already?" Jack replied with a frown.

"It's about Chris."

"I don't know anything about Chris, and I like it that way."

"Jack, he's disappeared," Eve said as she watched him closely, looking for some reaction.

Jack put down the wrench he'd been holding and wiped his greasy hands on a rag, "And why should I care?"

"It's not like Chris to just up and leave like this. Everything he owned is gone, his apartment is cleaned out and up for sale, his office at GH is completely vacant, and everything about him at GH has vanished," Eve explained.

"Not like him? Try exactly like him. He did it to me when I was just a kid," Jack shrugged, "So it doesn't surprise me that he'd do it now."

"What do you mean he did it when you were a kid?" Eve asked in confusion, "I thought Chris watched out for his siblings...took care of you all."

"For a while," Jack nodded, "We all looked up to him like he was the second coming. He was the big brother that every kid dreams of. Then one day....boom....he was gone, and so was our perfect life. He left us on our own, and we were shipped into foster care. It doesn't surprise me at all that Chris would just vanish."

"What do you mean he was gone? How long ago was that?"

"Chris was eighteen and ready to be on his own, I guess. So he split. And all of us were left to fend for ourselves. He just disappeared one night. He gave us the excuse that he was going out to the grocery store, but he never came home. We'd seen our old man do that to us a hundred times so it was nothing new. We knew the drill. We just never imagined that it would be Chris leaving us that way."

Eve frowned, "Not the Chris I know. He wouldn't just leave those that he cares about."

"He would, he did, and he always will. He's just like the old man. He's no different," Jack said as he tossed the rag onto the nearby table and walking out the back.

Alison frowned, "So still no word on Chris, huh?"

"None," Eve frowned, "You haven't heard anything, have you? No one talking, no rumors or anything?"

"The only thing we hear around here is the roar of engines," Alison pointed to the nearby motorcycles. She paused, glanced around for any passersby then continued, "But I will tell you something I thought was a little strange. The other day I was down at the mall. They were having a sell at Shoe Emporium and I just had to have some new leather sandals.."

"Alison," Eve interrupted.

"Oh yeah...sorry," Alison smiled sheepishly, "Anyway, as I was walking by the fountains, I saw Chris standing with this guy."

"What guy?" Ian spoke up.

"He looked like a real jerk. Stood about Chris' height, had dark hair, wore sunglasses, and had on this black suit. He looked like something out of a movie, and I didn't think he looked like a respectable member of society if you know what I mean," Alison explained.

"Mafia?" Eve asked.

"Could be," Alison shrugged, "I didn't listen to any conversation. I thought it was weird enough just to see Chris with a guy like that."

"Did it look like the guy was threatening Chris?"

"No," Alison thought for a moment, "Wait a minute. The guy was giving Chris something....in a large brown envelope."

"What happened then?" Ian asked.

"I don't know. Chris spotted me and I took off. I didn't want to end up sleeping with the fishes just because I saw something I shouldn't have. You know?"

"Thanks Alison," Eve replied as a customer entered the bike shop. Alison went to help her customer while Ian and Eve stepped out of the shop, "Ian, I don't like this at all. Chris just goes missing, practically vanishes off the face of the planet and Alison sees him with a mob guy?"

"How do you know he was a mob guy? Alison could have exaggerated," Ian tried to reason.

"How do we know he wasn't? Ian, something about all of this sounds very suspicious, and I don't like it one bit. Something is wrong, and Chris needs our help."

"Our help?"

"Yes," Eve said firmly, "Our help. You're going to help me find him."

"Why?"

"Because he's my friend, and he would do everything he could to return the favor. I owe him this," Eve explained, "I owe him a lot more than this actually, but this is a start. Ian, we have to do everything possible to make sure Chris is safe. I have to know he's alright."

"You're not going to let this go, are you?"

"No," She said adamantly, "I'm not. I have to try to help him, Ian."

Ian smiled, "That's what I love about you, Lambert. You're always thinking about other people before yourself."

"Yeah," Eve let her voice trail off, "That's me....." She frowned thinking about Chris and only hoping that she hadn't lost her best friend.
