The Loyalty of a Fan
As I sat back this week trying to decide what
to write about our dastardly hero, I pondered all my possibilities.
Should I write a column about my disappointment that Eve once again broke
Chris' heart? Nah, even I have had enough of my angst. Should
I write a column about my hopes that Chris might find a future with a certain
nurse? Nah, I won't rub a certain editor's nose in the fact that
I could be right for a change [I love ya Desi!;-)]. Should I write
a column about the way Chris has no story? Nah, I don't think anyone
wants to beat a dead horse.
So what should I write about? Well, I
sat around and starting thinking about what it means to me to be a Chris
fan. If you surf around the net enough, you'll find that Chris has
a tremendous amount of outspoken fans. So why are we still being
ignored in our desire for a front burner
storyline featuring Chris? I think it
must be because of who and what we represent.
Let's take a minute to examine what we have
before us. Chris Ramsey. What
words immediately come to mind? Okay,
besides handsome, sexy, suave, and charming. Dastardly, deceitful,
manipulative, scheming, the list goes on
and on. All in all, the words used to
describe Chris are, for the most part, not flattering. So how could
we possibly enjoy a character who is so nasty?
Most people would say that we must have a screw
loose. Most people being those in power at ABC, PC, and Disney.
They must regard us as equally as unappealing as Chris is at first glance
of his character.
But I have something to say about that.
I think we are the more intuitive people. We see beyond the simple
lines that the writers have put upon the page. We, instead, see the
depth of emotion played by the incredibly talented Nolan North. Nolan
continually takes the character of Chris to a new level over and over again
as he adds his own interpretation of the writer's words, Chris' character
and the scenes as he portrays Chris as a dastardly hero.
Dastardly Hero? You might say that this
is a contradiction in terms. But watching Nolan North's Chris Ramsey
over the span of a few weeks will completely change your mind. Chris
has his own way of doing things. They might not be the nicest way
of doing things, and usually other people get
hurt in the process. But that's just
Chris being Chris. He manipulates the situation to his own advantage,
he lies when it suits him, and he blackmails people when he needs to.
Does this make him completely
evil? One might think so if we hadn't
witnessed Chris' repeated displays
of heroism involving one Eve Lambert.
Chris becomes a hero in the truest sense of
the word whenever Eve Lambert is in trouble. Chris completely forgets
about his own welfare and springs into action to help her. He forgets
that his motto was looking out for number one, and he becomes Eve's knight
in shining armor.
So as Chris fans, we do have someone to be
proud of. Chris might do some nasty things, but who doesn't?
He might not always tell the truth, but who does? He might look out
for himself, but who doesn't? If anyone tells you they haven't done
something wrong sometime in their life, they're lying to you. There's
an old saying about casting the first stone. Maybe people should
remember that when they start blasting Chris for something he's done.
Do you think that we as Chris fans are horrible
people? I don't think so. I think we are good people.
We just like the honesty of a bad guy who does occasionally show a heart.
We're loyal to the bitter end. The worse our hero gets, the more
we defend him. The more he saves Eve, the prouder we are.
So_..for next week, why don't you email me
at [email protected] and
let me know what makes Chris appeal to you. Do you like him more
as a dastardly schemer? Or do you prefer him as the romantic hero?
Let me know and I'll share the opinions of Chris fans next week with all
the Cheerleaders.
