Fate/stay night is a Japanese visual novel eroge by TYPE-MOON, the company that created Tsukihime.  The game was quite big when it was released in Japan & no doubt the merchandise that followed it was quite hot, especially the character Saber.  Geneon had released an anime series of Fate/stay night in Japan & Geneon USA picked up the rights to it during Anime Expo 2005.  Since the story of Fate/stay night from the game was good from what I heard, no doubt the fans were expecting high hopes for the anime series.  The ending result is mixed for many.  Fate/stay night would later follow up on other games called Fate/hollow ataraxia & Fate/zero.
