WILLIAMSTOWN

This isn't a tourist information site but I stayed in a marvellous B&B, Heathville House . If you like a good cooked breakfast after a night out and your looking for accommodation in the area try here.

Taken from Gem Pier the Melbourne city skyline can be seen (just) through the ships' masts above the man's head.

Right behind me was.........

THE CUSTOMS HOUSE

This actually used to be Williamstown Customs House.

Not quite to my taste inside but I felt comfortable enough and the staff were friendly.

Looking around the bar I didn't see anything familiar in the beer line and plumped for Carlton Draught. A decent enough lagerish/bitterish beer and the one I drank most of the time in Victoria.

An advert for a bottle caught my eye "Corona" which reminded me of a soft drink from my youth. Mentioning this to my host, George, he bought me one.

It was a very palatable Mexican beer but it was an awful long way to travel to try it.

THE STEAM PACKET

Midday Saturday and a pub, a real pub, a place for blokes to stand about and chat although I'm sure ladies would be made welcome too.

Perhaps in need of a lick of paint but that only added to the atmosphere.

THE YACHT CLUB

An imposing building outside but I don't know what they thought they were doing with the interior.

Ok, they get a lot of sunshine in this part of the world so they can sit outside under those coffee advertising umbrellas but they also boast here of having all four seasons in one day and this not a place I'd like to be on one of those days.

No draught beer either so maybe it was a cafe.

There was a good selection of bottles though. I wasn't too impressed with the Boags' brew I had but I enjoyed the Cascade beer here, and in other places, and Red Back a tasty wheat beer.

HOBSON'S BAY

It didn't look much outside and not too much to commend it inside except pints of Carlton Draught and lively bar staff.
A good pub.

THE ROSE

This place has seen better days. Even the video games machines in the back room looked rundown.

I'm told the bottle shop stocks a great range of imported ales though.

THE BRISTOL

Great looking building but the paintwork, both inside and out, does nothing for it.

Once a bustling working man's pub its spacious rooms were almost empty on my visit.

This was also the only pub where I came across continuous "strong" language from, I hasten to add, an old pom (though he had emigrated many years ago).

THE RIFLE CLUB

Across the railway line from the Bristol this one got its name from a now vanished army rifle range.

Once known as a "blood pub", as there was often some on the floor, it is now an African theme pub with mock log bars and a rhino in one room.

I think it might have been more interesting before !

THE SEAGULLS NEST

Originally the Newport Family Hotel possibly because it is up the road in Newport. The Seagulls are the Williamstown Aussie Rules team so there is a connection.
