Escape from the family for a long weekend in Melbourne with my net-friend
paperdragon.
Some of the photographs did not turn out as well as I would
have wished (some are really blurred) so I have included the odd shot not
taken by myself.
My first night in Melbourne so I have to see The Crown Casino and it is very impressive the fountains and exploding gas jets outside are an experience in themselves. Inside there are restaurants and other eateries, games arcades, THE Casino, cinemas, nightclubs and bars of which I tried several. I don't recall what I drank except that I didn't think much of the Victoria Bitter. Not the best of photographs but the helicopter was shaking. |
So here's a better one I was sent. I don't remember the beams of light shooting into the sky when I was here but it had been a long day......... ........what with the early start, hanging about the airport bar, sitting on a plane with nothing much to do except drink etc, etc, etc....... (I had, however, been astounded to find myself sitting on the plane next to an old, Australian gentleman who's mother had come from my home town Great Harwood, Lancashire.) |
More impressive looking from the bottom up.
The date on this shot proves I didn't take it.
The bar is 50 odd floors up, somewhere around the top row of lights. | Why else would I have gone up there ? Well......
I lied about the helicopter. |
This is the most exclusive bar in Melbourne, possibly the world.

I know it could be any bar in the north of England but it is, honestly, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
This place is so exclusive I don't even know where it is.
DEFA'S
VISIT TO THE BROCKET
Actually bearing the name "Princes Gate Hotel" but known as Young
and Jackson's this occupies the prime corner opposite Flinders Street
railway station and St. Paul's Anglican Cathederal.
Extremely busy when I called in but it was Saturday night and the
"MOOMBA" Festival Parade had just finished.
Downstairs was quite spartan but upstairs was very "plush", a fitting
setting for the large painting of the naked Chloe !
A "British Pub". I didn't have a drink here because it was shut.
Well it must have been 10 o'clock !
Another "British Pub" ........
Still it did have English beer, of sorts. Here are some clearer shots.
Thanks
George. Now I remember !
So I moved on to
.........in a cellar
I tried a pint of Tetley's Bitter and, though it was rather more pricey
than I'm used to, considering how far it had travelled it wasn't too
bad a pint.
(You can decide for yourself why the other photos aren't quite
focused.)
The Sherlock Hilmes is at 415 Collins St. and the Charles
Dickens is up the street.
Upstairs this time and back on the Carlton Draught.
I saw over the bar what I thought were half pint, dimpled glasses
with handles. I was wrong they were glasses which disappeared in my
small hands and I had to re-order as the barman was still getting
my change.
Around the corner from the Charles Dickens on Elizabeth St, off Flinders
St.
My final drink in Melbourne on the way to the airport.
An early opening pub the signs on the walls advertise things like
:
I, of course, was too late for breakfast and too early for the entertainment
...............
This was a sports bar with various shirts, gloves, helmets and balls
in cases around the room and half a motorbike stuck to the wall over
the stairs !
and
"Foxy Bar Ladies"
also
"Self Service Breakfast" for $2.00.
Once inside however there is a further offer.
