PEPPA PEER EDUCATION FACTSHEETS- STEROIDS
Steroids are drugs derived from hormones. Anabolic Steroids are performance enhancing drugs derived from testosterone, a naturally occurring male hormone.

Steroids are also known as Roids, Steroids, nandrolone and stanozol

When taking anabolic steroids in pill form be aware of the dosage of the pills you are taking as different pills will vary in strength.
When injecting steroids all the normal precautions associated with injecting drugs must be followed. Make sure your needles are clean and never share your needles with anyone else as this exposes you to the risk of contracting blood borne diseases including HIV/AIDS. Clean needles can be obtained from your local needle exchange.

Anabolic Steroid use can be detected through urine tests up to six months after using the drug though there have been cases where detection has been made even after this period.

Anabolic Steroids are classified individually but are generally Class C drugs. Supply and Intent to supply these drugs are illegal, however it is not illegal to possess or import anabolic steroids for personal use.

There are several kinds of anabolic steroids currently available. Nandrolone and stanozol are the types currently available on prescription in the UK. Anabolic steroids work by increasing protein production within cells and slowing the elimination of muscle cells that are no longer required. Anabolic Steroid use does not result in increased muscle size and strength unless this use is combined with intensive training and a diet high in both calories and protein.

Anabolic Steroids have a masculinising effect on the body, that is they cause the development or amplification of typically male characteristics. Common side effects include an increase in body hair, deepening of the voice, thinning of hair on the users head and increased levels of aggression.

Use of Anabolic Steroids over a prolonged period of time can result in a wide range of side effects including; impotence, shrinking of testicles and reduced sperm count (men), enlargement of the clitoris and breast reduction (women), acne, jaundice, high blood pressure, liver damage, cancer, and increased risk of coronary heart disease. Long term steroid usage can lead to a psychological addiction to the drug.
