Poppers are the name given to a group of drugs known as Alkyl Nitrites. They are yellow flammable liquids that evaporate very quickly. They are usually sold in little brown bottles and cost about 5. Poppers have a very distinctive and strong smell somewhat similar to stale sweat or a mouldy room.
One of the chemicals in the poppers group, and probably the best known, is amyl nitrite. It was first used in the treatment of angina (a heart condition) as it helped to dilate blood vessels and get blood to the heart.
They can also be known as Liquid Gold, Amyl Nitrite, Butyl Nitrite, Isobutyl Nitrite, Rush, Rock, TNT
Amyl and Butyl Nitrite are controlled under the Medicines Act 1968. Possession is not illegal but supply of poppers can be an offence under the Medicines Act.
Poppers are usually sniffed straight from the bottle through they can also be poured unto a cloth and sniffed from that.
It is worth being cautious when using poppers as it will burn your skin if you spill it on yourself. It will also burn the inside of your nostrils if you have a heavy session.
Also if you suffer from low blood pressure, heart trouble or have had a stroke then a high degree of caution should be exercised as this can make your condition worse.
When inhaled poppers deliver a head rush caused from blood vessels being dilated. This rush or high comes on almost immediately after sniffing the poppers and lasts for a couple of minutes. Once the rush is over people often feel a bit dizzy due to the drop in blood pressure associated with the dilation of your blood vessels.
Poppers are often used in sex as they relax smooth muscle including sphincter muscles in your bum. They are also reported to make orgasms appear to last longer and increase the size of a mans erection for a few minutes after sniffing the drug.
Common side effects associated with poppers include headaches (which can last for days after a heavy session), falling over due to dizziness and rashes around nose and mouth due to chemical burns from the poppers. Nausea and hot flushes are the most common side effects experienced after using poppers.
Poppers are not an addictive drug though many users have reported cravings for the drug when out clubbing or during sex.
The side effects of poppers generally diminish after use of the drug is stopped, though recovery may take a few days. |
