Basics

The game is about having a hero squad which is able to defeat enemies, that may be AI generated or other players squads.

You need two types of heroes:

1)Tank: will work as a meat shield for other heroes.
2)Damage dealer: will use ranged skills to deal damage to your enemies.

If you dont have enough damage dealers, you can complete your team with heroes that will give more time to them. Like... Konung, Frost, Iceberg, and so. Anything that helps to keep enemies far from your damage dealers. (NOTE: this is also valid for traps. Traps aren't that powerful in this game. You can upgrade them, but heroes you can upgrade AND equip with up to 6 artifacts, so an upgraded trap that deals damage won't really damage a hero that is both upgraded and equipped. That said, best traps are the ones that let your heroes to have more time to fire at enemies, like Hypnotizing trap and Graveyard.)

Who should be my tank?
Answer: any hero with really high HP (Hit Points). If this hero has a skill that makes it possible to last for more time, or to delay the enemies, even better. Considering the recently added Titans, best option would be Treebeard, as he has the highest HP up to now, and a skill that helps him to survive, or Dazzling, which has less HP but I'm curious to check how good is his skill once you get it to the max, BUT, those cost a lot of event coins. Excluding the Titans to consider normal heroes, good options are Iron Heart, which you get cards from an event of the common cycle, has HP equal to Dazzling and a good skill that puts enemies far from your damage dealers, and Knight, which is weaker about both HP and skill but you can collect cards very very easily. If you are a newbie, start with Knight, but move to Iron Heart when you can, it's what I would say. Whirlpool would be an option like Knight, but it's much more difficult to get enough cards.

Who should be my damage dealer?
What should you look for? High damage, high range, and low cooldown. Also, skills that damage more than one enemy. Best option? To me, Thunder Catcher. Yes, you need to buy his cards for lots of event coins, but he is the best. His damage is not the highest, but he causes damage to almost the entire enemy squad, and he does it quickly. Nowadays, if you fight someone at Arena and the opponent doesn't use Thunder Catcher, you know it will be an easy fight. There are people wanting him to be nerfed, and this is something to consider, too, you can spend to have him and he's nerfed when you are close to it. A 2nd option would be Iceberg / Snowman, which causes area damage. Snowman appear once each year in a special Xmas event, so getting all cards is very hard. Iceberg is his clone and cards could be collected more frequently, but would be still hard for newbies. Hunter is an option too, but he's weaker than Snowman and as rare as him (comes once each year, in a Halloween event), so forget him. Treebeard is another one I can consider in the future: his damage is very high and he affects the entire enemy squad, the problem is the long cooldown. About normal heroes, best options are Blue Witcher (which you can collect all cards easily), and Green Arrow, which you get cards from an event of the normal cycle. I have choosen Blue Witcher in the beginning, I have him at lv 60, and I can say he's amazing. I have never really upgraded my Green Arrow, so I don't know his full potential, but I know people who chose him and are happy about it.

Of course, you should have more than one damage dealer. You wont spend so many crystals on these before your main damage dealer reaches his maximum level, but a 2nd and 3rd damage dealers are useful. Use a hero you intend already to evolve after your main tank and damage dealer. For example, when I was a newbie, I used Blue Witcher as damage dealer, and Elf as 2nd damage dealer. I didn't level up Elf to his maximum level, however, as I decided to work on Priest, and later, on Snowman.

Priest deserves some words. He's probably the best hero you can get cards for free from the normal event cycle. The reason: he works as both tank and damage dealer. Well, not him, in fact, but the skeletons he invokes. To do that, he needs dead bodies of your own heroes or your enemies. When you upgrade Priest's skill, skeletons get both more HP and more damage, so these skeletons act as both meat shields and damage dealers. When I was evolving my Priest, I have confirmed: Priest around lv 54 and any weak heroes that just become bodies is enough to clear the main raid. At this point, enemies have mages that cast poison spell and the Priest dies, but a single skeleton kills all the enemies.
