Ok, let's talk about your heroes' artifacts, which will increase their power a lot.
First, look at this image I got somewhere, it has some errors, but you can download it as a reference:

Errors: 1) the item named as Mana Potion in game is called just Mana. 2) Potion image is not like that, it's alike the Mana Potion (Mana) image, but the liquid inside the bottle is red. 3) Image used as "Potion" is in fact for Poison, an item that improves DPS and Special Skill for warriors or shooters (like the Whetstone). 4) the game does not call the slots hand 1 and hand 2, but right hand and left hand. 5) some items are missing the slot them occupy: Magic Staff (right hand), Magic Boots (feet) and Magic Cloack (back).
As you see, there is no item to improve speed stat. Items may improve 1) HP only; 2) DPS + skill; 3) HP + DPS +skill.
Items that improve just HP you will want to equip your tanks. They start giving +20% per artifact level, but you will want to reforge them using yellow and red gems, so they will come to +40% HP per artifact level.
Artifacts that improve both DPS and skill, when are green, will have a 40% bonus split through both stats in different ways, like +30% DPS and +10% skill, or +17% DPS and +23% skill. Even a 1%-39% split is possible. While reforged to yellow, one stat should be at 24% and the other at 40%. If skill is at 40%, you don't need to reforge it to red (DPS stat is useless). Reforged to red, all these items will give +40% DPS and +40% skill per level.
Items that increase three stats are erratic. You can hardly imagine how will they be as red while they are green. Some combinations I have as red artifacts, just to mention a few, are (per level): +14% HP, +12% DPS, +32% skill; +13% HP, +13% DPS, +34% skill; +24%, +14% DPS, +12% skill. As you see, even the total bonus varies.
Usually you want just HP of your tanks and skill of your damage dealers, so anything less than 40% is unacceptable. But, there is one variation people call "perfect artifact", these give +40% skill and HP bonus. These are very rare, I have just two of them, both are magical amulets and give +12%, +10% DPS and +40% skill each level. During late game you may want to use green gems to reforge artifacts, with the hope to get some of these.
Speaking about to reforge, I never used less than 1K gems to reforge. I have heard that the chance of failings is much bigger than what the game tells you. Also, you can influence the chance of getting something, if you reforge an artifact from a hero who is already equipped with artifacts that occupy slots. Look, the reforged artifact won't become a helmet if the hero is already using one, as the head slot is already taken. Equip the hero with slot specific artifacts, so you remove them from the list of what you can get as result of reforging. (I once thought it would work while exploring artifacts, but it doesn't. I tried to equip boots before exploring, but the game didn't let me to do it, even considering the hero had nothing at feet slot. When I revealed the artifact, you guessed it right, it was boots.) It's pretty obvious, but I will say it anyway. If you are going to reforge artifacts to improve DPS and skill, prefer the ones you can equip any hero, it means Crystal Amulet, Crystal Ring or Magic Ring.
Runes are items that you use to equip your avatar. Click configuration button at top left corner of game screen, then click your avatar. Next screen you can change your appearance, and at right side, you check your equipped runes. Click "all runes" button to go to your rune inventory.
Runes gives 1% to 15% bonuses, and are, in fact, the thing that is hardest to someone that doesn't spend real money to compete with those who pay. Check this table (I can't confirm these data, I got it at Discord):

In the beginning, all runes you get give 1% bonus. After you 10 runes, your range expands to 1-2% runes. Get 30 and this expands to 1-3%. Get 60 and you can get 1-4% runes, etc. And I admit, I said wrong things about this at game chat, so forget that. What counts is all the runes you already got, the ones you sold count, it's what I have heard.
Getting really powerful runes (12-15%) this way is really hard. The cost to get 700 runes is enough to buy all cards for 2 Titans. AND, this would require time, too, as each Cave event, using the shop, you wouldn't be able to buy more than like 40 runes. What someone can do is to buy them using Kreds, or, maybe, free Kreds. Our retired hero, ButcherBabies, got some very good runes "for free", because he answered polls at Kongregate site to get Kreds. If you want to try it, click the Kred icon near your user name at Kong top bar, then click on "Buy Kreds", then "Earn free Kreds". I have tried it, but it doesn't work for me. I need to answer several polls before getting the prize, but at some point there will be a poll that is not interested in people from my area, and the process is interrupted with me getting nothing. Good luck.
Anyway, try find something useful. I twice have bought runes the trader offered me for 400 crystals. One gives +3% skill for heroes with Raise the Dead skill (Priest), and the other gives +3% skill for heroes with Battle Cry and Hailstorm skills (Konung, and the recently added titan Minotaur, plus Snowman / Iceberg). I also used runes that give +3% gold from battles when I was upgrading my castle through Cave event. I'm at 1-3% range so, it's what I have at hand. And then devs have released specfic runes to equip the Titans. I never got one, just saw the ones at sale. These 15% bonuses looks small, but they aren't. Someone could probably dominate the game with 10 more runes equipped by two Titans. The lucky part is: I really doubt there is someone spending on these, hahaha!
The trader is that beardy guy that comes offering trades from time to time, you know who I'm talking about.
The trader has a time, he comes again five hours after the time he left the last time. You can set a timer too, or to use one of your buildings as a timer. Example: as the trader left, collect production at you castle, then don't collect Arena production again, until it's half filled. At this point you know the trader will come again. But, you need to "call" him, it means, fight. I have heard that 1-50 fights will make him appear (and doesn't matter it you win or lose, he appeared to me while I was getting gold, insta-losing at Cave fight 80). Usually it doesn't take that long, just a few fights... But, he won't appear if you are just using portals to get awards you could get by fighting.
From start, he will offer you cards you can get from your castle buildings (common / green heroes: Knight, Archer, Assassin, Elf, Green Witcher; rare / yellow heroes: Fairy, Viking, Sub Zero, Red Witcher; epic / purple heroes: Barbarian, Poisoner, Warrior, Charmer, Blue Witcher; traps: Freezing trap, Hypnotizing trap, Toxic trap, Fire trap, Trap with lightnings). Do NOT waste crystals buying them, but if he's selling them for gold, buy everything you can. Gold is mostly useless, so don't worry about spending it.
The single things he will offer for gold are cards, which soon you will complete all, and crystals, at 10, 100 and 1K amounts. The gold price changes accordingly to the last main raid battle you won. Anyway, always get all crystals for gold you can. Other things are traded for crystals, except yellow and red gems, which he trades for green gems. I won't trade gems anymore (I have done it some time ago), and I won't trade crystals for stars or portals. I will buy arena passes for 15 crystals (I accumulate them for Total War event, as I'm not really interested in Arena PvP, and its price is lower than what we can get at Arena - 16 crystals per arena pass, buying 10), and I will also buy blue blazons. Blue blazons are the main way for me to double event coins when I play events that give them as reward. Yellow blazons also pay for themselves, just considering double bonus for daily quests and castle production, but for now I have too many of them. Red blazons are something I have used, but now I'm not intending to use anymore (and I have 22, lol, enough for five months using one per week). Anyway, if you use any blazon type, remember that buying for crystals is cheaper than using event coins (there's a discount).
And, you know, you can refresh the offers paying some crystals. The first refresh costs 5 and you should ALWAYS pay. There's a low chance that the free chest will give you something that is not worthy 5 crystals (if this happens, it's because you got gold, lol). 2nd refresh costs 20, and I say: ALWAYS pay for it too. This time you can get something bad more frequently, but the chance to get something good, like a blazon or 1K crystals is worthy. Next time, it costs 45 crystals. When it's the trader, I pay it, and, when its an event shop (which costs event coins to buy things) I don't. You know, gold is useless, and I want use it to buy crystals. Next refresh costs 80 crystals and I don't pay, unless I feel lucky.
Event shop of events that use event coins are another version of the trader. I advise to always pay 25 for two refreshes, but 45, I usually don't pay, like said. It's incredible that we have an event like Fog, that has ridulously bad rewards, but it's still useful, as its shop resets each 4 hours, lol.
