San Rafael, (Marin County):
The first day of filming began on Monday, June 26, 1972.  The first scenes filmed involved Carol and John's story.  All the cruising scenes were originally scheduled for filming in San Rafael.  But, after the first night's filming San Rafael revoked their permit and the crew was not allowed to continue shooting beyond a second day. Location Manager, Nancy Giebink contacted another nearby small town, Petaluma and they were graciously allowed to shoot the remainder of the film there.
Lucas managed to persuade the San Rafael city council to come back on Monday, July 3rd and Sunday, July 23 to film some scenes including a montage of cars cruising.
John Milner gets pulled over by the local cop,  Holstein in front of the theatre on 4th St.
The cruising scenes in San Rafael are easily identified because all traffic is seen moving in one direction.  The scenes filmed on Petaluma Blvd, N. have two-way traffic
Most of the filming in San Rafael took place on 4th St. between C Street and Lincoln.
American Graffiti was filmed in 30 shooting days, and even though the film takes place in Modesto it was shot entirely on location in the northern bay area of San Francisco. Both San Rafael and Petaluma California were used because their downtown streets were well preserved and hadn't changed much since 1962, the year the film takes place.  To learn more keep readin', Sam.
