Axis (Jamaica) Limited and Guardian Life Limited.

MELLACE CLAIMS FIRST CHESS TITLE

Candidate Master Andrew Mellace won his first chess title when he scored five points from six games to top the 2006 staging of the Robert Wheeler Chess Open at the Guardian Life Headquarters last weekend.

The 29 year-old, who teaches chess fulltime, secured the title after registering critical victories against a number of more fancied opponents, including the 2004 champion National Master Russel Porter and defending champion National Master Duane Rowe.

Second place was shared between three players Duane Rowe, Alain Morais and Equitable Brown, who all each on 4.5 points.

The section for players rated under 1800, was won by the fast improving Camperdown High student Warren Cornwall, who scored five points. Second place was shared between Allan Wilson and Ardenne Highs Amari Graham. Peta-Gaye Reid of Wolmers Girls took the best female prize.

This, the fourth staging of the tournament, was sponsored by Guardian Life and Axis Jamaica Ltd. It was named in honour of National Master Robert Wheeler for his outstanding contribution to the sport of chess in Jamaica. Wheeler acted as Arbiter for the 2-day event.
