Venue: Holy Child Hood High School Registration;
8:00am - 8:45am The 2005 Robert Wheeler Chess Open which is being sponsored by All Island Gypsum Distributors Limited, will be held on June 4-5 2005, at the Holy Childhood High school in the format of an open 6 round Swiss. This is the third staging of this Tournament, which is held in Honor of arguably Jamaica’s longest serving chess administrator/player, NM ROBERT WHEELER.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION Registration
takes place between 8:00 am and 8:45 am on NB: Half (½) point bye available only for first round and will only be allowed after proper registration (including payment of membership and entry fee) GUARANTEED PRIZES OPEN SECTION: 1st - $10,000.00 plus trophy; 2nd - $5,000 plus medal; 3rd $3,000 plus medal. AMATEUR SECTION: 1st - $3,000 plus trophy; 2nd - $2,000 plus medal; 3rd $1,000 plus medal. W0MEN’S SECTION: 1st - $3,000 plus trophy; 2nd - $2,000 plus medal; 3rd - $1,000 plus medal. Other prizes include best Under 10 and under 14 year-old
players, best rural player, best female player, best junior and best new

English-bred Robert Wheeler has lived in Jamaica for thirty years, serving
chess in the Caribbean tremendously. Currently the Secretary of the Jamaica
Chess Federation, he has been Jamaican national champion on many occasions
and has represented the “land of wood and water” at numerous
chess Olympiads, including the most recent in Bled, Slovenia. He has also
been Jamaica’s delegate to a number of Fide congresses. For thirty years Wheeler has remained very competitive on the chess circuit, putting up strong performances against Jamaica’s younger generation of leading players (including NM Shane Matthews and FM Warren Elliott) and recently placed 5th in the 2004 Jamaica national Champs and qualified for the Jamaican Chess Olympiad team. |
