FIREWORKS GALORE – THE 2005 JAMAICAN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - !!! The atmosphere is pregnant with tension. One can almost touch it! This is understandable as Jamaica’s leading gladiators prepare to wage war on the chess battlefields. Yes it is that time again. Jamaica’s national chess championships are about to unfold. The 2005 edition of this prestigious event will commence with the opening ceremony at 2 pm on Saturday 2nd April, 2005 at the Norman Manley Law School, the well-appointed venue for the event. First round action is slated to commence on Sunday 3rd April, 2005.
LASCO - We welcome you !!!! This year’s tournament is of particular significance as the Jamaica Chess Federation “(the “JCF”) welcomes (with open arms!!) the new sponsors of the event, LASCO, one of the leading companies in the region. The conglomerate, headed by the shrewd Lascelles Chin, has forged an alliance with the JCF by agreeing to commit to the development of chess in Jamaica. Mr. Chin is ably aided and abetted by general manager Teri Thomas and former Campion College chess combatant Stephen Newland. More details of LASCO’s involvement will be divulged very soon.
…THEN THERE WERE TWELVE!! This year’s championships will feature twelve players including the defending champion FM Warren Elliott, record seven-time national champion NM Shane Matthews, the wily veteran and six-time national champion NM Robert Wheeler, former national champion and national coach NM Jomo Pitterson and last, but certainly not least, Jamaica’s women’s champion and candidate master Deborah Richards. Due to LASCO’s generousity the first prize is J$25,000.00, the highest ever in the history of the championships! The second place winner will receive $15,000.00 while third place will net $10,000.00! The attractive prize fund will certainly guarantee exciting chess.
The opening ceremony will be held shortly after the awards ceremony for 2003. The twinning of the two ceremonies should ensure that Jamaica’s premier chess event pawns off with a real bang! More anon!
