Manipulating Graphics

Graphics such as photos, clipart or drawings are manipulated in a certain manner by myself before they are inserted in the Newsletter .
(There are other ways however, to achieve the same result but the following is the way that I have found most suitable for myself.)

I use IrfanView to manipulate the graphics in the order as below.
For more detailed instructions on how to use IrfanView for the following steps, go to Using IrfanView.

Crop the Photo:
Cropping can get rid of unwanted features/clutter on the margins of the photo, isolate the feature you want to highlight or to centre a poorly taken photo.

Enhance Colours:
This is only done if the photo is too dark, too much blue, red, green, or to sharpen the photo if it appears dull in colour.

Change the Resolution:
The resolution is changed to 150 DPI.
I have found this to be the minimum resolution which still retains the quality. The photos in the Newsletter are mostly only half a page wide and at this small size the loss in quality is only visible if the Newsletter is enlarged by more than 100%.
A DPI of 200 or more could be used but the size in KB of the photo increases.

Resize the Photo:
For a photo to be inserted into the Newsletter, set the width to 8.5cm for a photo in a half column or 17cm for the full page photo on Page 1.

Save the Photo:
I always use the Save As option as I then retain the original photo which can be used again in case of a mistake.
Normally I choose the same folder as where the original photo came from but I need to rename it to prevent the original from being overwritten.
For the name of the file I use the original name followed by "_n". For example if the original photo was named tree.jpg, it is renamed to tree_n.jpg
I use jpg as the Save As Type and decrease the quality to 55%. This gives me a further decrease in the size in KB of the photo, preventing the Newsletter becoming too large in KB size.
