Graphics

Why are Graphics Important?

Graphics include photos and images used in the Newsletter and Website. Graphics can take up a lot of Kilobytes (KB)
With increase in KB size, the Newsletter and Website take longer to download and take up valuable bandwidth.
At the time that the QBW Website and Newsletter commenced, dial up internet was the only means of accessing the web.
It was thus important to keep graphics small in KB size while trying to maintain quality.

With the Geocities Website there is a limit of 15 Megabytes (MB) storage space.
With the Newsletter the aim was to keep the Newsletter size under 500 KB.

Photos are sent to the Editor/Web Master as printed photos or by email.
Printed photos are scanned and then returned to the owner. The preference is for the photo to be sent by email.
The size and quality of the photos received by email  for inclusion in the Newsletter varies widely, with some photos over 1 MB in size!
Many members are unaware of how to manipulate graphics to decrease them in KB size and pixel size.

How Are Photos Manipulated?

Before inserting any photos into the Website or Newsletter, they have to be manipulated, usually in the following manner:

Cropping Any unwanted edge sections of the photo are trimmed out.
Enhance colours Only done if the photo is too dark, too much blue etc
Set the Resolution Set the Pixels/Inch, also known as Dots Per Inch (DPI).
The more Pixels/Inch the higher the resolution and usually the better the quality.
Resize Change the photo's pixel size or inch/cm size depending on how the photo will be used.
Saving in a specific format Photos are usually saved as JPEG's.

If you want to jump right in and manipulate a graphic then go to:

Using Microsoft Photo Editor

Using IrfanView

If you would like to have a more detailed explanation on graphics then start with Pixels
