Telereg
Telereg is one of the old-fashioned options provided to SFU students for registering courses, applying for graduation,
and checking grades. And I hate it. Why?
The recorded robotic woman's voice takes forever to spit out her words (eg. "This... course... is... bio... lo... gi... cal... sci... en...ces... 9... 1... 1... Sec...
tion... D... ze... ro... one... "). Sure, there are reasons she repeats certain lines over, to ensure that you don't make a mistake, but it's sooooo slow, you're practically
ready to register for the next semester by the time you're done. And, if the particular
course you want is full, you've got to wait forever to find that out.
Checking grades on Telereg is one of the most traumatic, lifetime scarring experiences you could ever have.
Especially when you think you may have failed a course, it's like a verdict for the death penalty. Of course, it's also pretty bad if you
feel you deserved a high grade, yet you don't know if you actually got it and you're all, like, "What if I didn't get it???? What am I gonna do?????".
The mechanical lady's voice is soooo slow, and your heart just pounds and pounds, and you feel like you're gonna explode. You're caught between the
impatience for her to hurry up and the desire for her to slow down so you won't hafta be faced with the truth. Then when she finally gets to the grade,
it's like, in a nasally voice: "You received a grade of..." (a pause that stretches for eternity)... "B"(or A or C or D or whatever)... and then another eternal pause
-- and you get anxious, cuz then you start wondering if perhaps you did do better than you thought and you got a B "plus". So there's this huge spurt of hope!!
But then again.... you could've gotten an B "minus"... and you heart plummets again... Then there's the possibility you just got a plain "B"... hmm... somehow, that leaves you
just emotionless. Then she says either "minus" or "plus" or nothing at all, and you either wet your pants or faint or start writing out your will or whatever.
And then, it's on to the long wait for her to announce the grade for your next course, and all that anticipation and worry build up again.
Is it worth it?? NO! Someone even told me that "B" and "D" sound very much alike on the phone. So, if you're expecting a low grade, and you hear "B", you'll think "D" and,
gosh darn it, someone better save you before you jump off that cliff.
Sometimes, even, your prof hasn't yet put in the grades and you get a GN or "No grades are currently available" in place of that letter grade. So, grrrrrrrr,
you're going to have to go through the same process tomorrow.
There's only one solution to solving the Telereg problem: use the Web.
