There's no such thing as a good night's sleep...
I typed this up after my first two semesters at SFU. It doesn't make much sense,
but... well, I'm just going to put it here anyway.
Hmm.. what is sleep? Could any of you post-secondary people possibly tell me what "sleep" is??? I've forgotten. When you enter any
post-secondary institution, you will never sleep again, period. Never. Aha, you think you're sleeping when you're lying
down on one of the couches at school with your eyes closed... but you're NOT. Your brain's still reviewing your psychology notes, you actually
dream you're studying physics -- NO, that's Nnot sleeping. Dreaming does not equal sleep. How can it? You're still stressing out
in you sleep! That's not sleep -- I repeat, that's not sleep. Trust me. But then again... what am I BS-ing about here?
I dunno! I'm too sleep-deprived. Sorree.
Even when you're on vacation, your body will have totally forgotten how to sleep. You will wake up at 5:30AM, thinking you have to cram one last
thing into your already stuffed mind... You will not be able to fall asleep again... No matter how tired you are, you will be too tired to sleep...
Deal with it.
Do you remember...?
At one time in our early lives, I'm sure we laughed (or would've laughed) at an adult sitting up on a bench in the middle of a park with his/her
eyes closed and snoring away like an old motorboat. Or even one in the middle of a mall! Or how about at a student sprawled out across a public couch in the middle
of a university campus? When we were kids, we thought nap time was for losers. After all, we weren't tired, right? We just wanted to play and play and play!
And sure, those big people who took naps, especially in public, were just plain strange.
But... we've become one of them. And it doesn't sound strange anymore... does it? After endless cram sessions and all-nighters, we'll
crash just about anywhere! It doesn't matter who sees us, it doesn't matter who catches us acting like motorboats or drooling in our sleep (oops, did I say that?);
we will sleep anywhere and anytime. Even sitting up! That's one skill we develop at post-secondary institutions; sleeping sitting up! Wow, so talented.
Of course, everyone goes through that "first time" anxiety. "Will people look at me funny?" "Will someone steal my backpack while I'm snoozing?" (And yes,
this has reportedly happened to several people). "Will I not wake up in time for my next class??" But then there's all that pressure: "Everybody's DOING IT." And you're
soooooooooo sleepy. So join in already!!! It's part of the campus culture! And if you feel you need protection... get a buddy to watch over you while you sleep.
But after awhile, you'll be doing it anywhere and everywhere. Yep, you'll fit right in.
