The gulf of Thailand is bordered by Malaysia to the south. Bangkok to the North, and Cambodia to the easr. This long, narrow gulf has two main areas that appeal to scuba divers: Koh Samui, Koh Pha ngan, and Koh Tao in the south, and Pattaya and Koh Chang to the northeast.
The friendly easy going islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are located a relatively short distance from Thailand's east coast city of Surat Thani in Southern Thailand. Originally full of coconut plantations, these islands have developed into a paradise for people searching for a completely relaxed life style. Exotic dive site names such as Koh Wao, Hin Bai and Chumphon Pinnacle all lie within easy reach of these islands, and some of the diving here can be spectacular. Gulf dive sites offer a pleasant diversion from such vigorous activities as lying on the beach drinking cool coconuts frech off the tree, turning over to tan your other side, or dancing the night away at one of the local night clubs. Interesting diving combined with an aimless lift style on the islands makes for a very enjoyable diving holiday. Pattaya, along Thailand's eastern seaboard, is located just a short three hour drive from Bangkok. Popular as a weekend escape for those living a chaotic life in the capital, Pattaya's dive sites stretch from Pattaya Bay to the border of Cambodia. Although mainly a popular place in Thailand for fiving intruction, especially for the hardworking weekend divers out of Bangkok, the waters around Pattaya can offer experienced divers the opportunity to dive on ship wrecks an activity sadly lacking in other locations around the country. Farther to the east, Koh Chang right near the boder of Cambodia has become more popular for diving over the past few years. From the frenzied activities on Pattaya's reefs to the exotic and raving entertainment scene at night, Pattaya is most comparehensive resort in Thailand. In Pattaya, there's something for everyone.
