----------------------------------------
If you've never read Tolkien's TH and LOTR, you really should.

If only to go where the grass is greener, the air is clearer, and the motives are purer in your mind.

Closed Canon
Unless some manuscripts are discovered, don't go rushing to the bookstore expecting the latest and greatest masterpiece from these recently dead masters.

a wee pict J.R.R. Tolkien
This quiet pipe-smoking scholar from Oxford produced the single most fascinating work I have ever read. I could get lost in Tolkien's Middle Earth, fraught with its terrible dangers and awesome wonders.

J.R.R. Tolkien paints a world that appeals to the senses of one frustrated with the machinations, both literal and metaphorical, of our modern society.

a wee pict Isaac Asimov
You will have to look hard to find a more prolific writer than Isaac Asimov. Trained in the old school of science fiction, which he did much to develop, Asimov's works may come across as naive and hokey to some individuals.

But anyone with an appreciation of history and thought will soon learn that Asimov's tales often tackle some of the hardest knots humanity has to offer. His short stories are a joy; his longer works are to be devoured.

a wee pict Frank Herbert
I'll admit it: I've only read one book by Frank Herbert. But "Dune" is a facinating novel that is vastly populated and richly detailed.

Like a true erudite, Herbert competently interweaves a pressing plot with societal castes, religions, politics, and basic needs of a desperate people.

a wee pict Emily Dickinson
Again, another author I've had little exposure to. But the few pieces I have studied in various classes are enough to illustrate the literal giant she was destined to become.

It never ceases to amaze me that she suffered from agoraphobia yet was able to produce such tight little works that crack gleams into the inner workings of mankind.

a wee pict Douglas Adams
If you've never read Douglas Adams, well... then I feel sorry for you. He is simply one of the quickest reading, yet alarmingly hilarious, authors you can pick up.

His ability to create absurd scenarios is second to none. Plus, he's an Apple Master... what more could you want?
